Wingless Sprints Australia Pty Ltd (WSA)
If you like excitement, hang onto your hats as Australia’s own Wingless Sprintcars are set to fly in 2008-2009
At the recent National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) conference, Wingless Sprints Australia Pty Ltd (WSA) owner, Dale Matthews, addressed board members with an update of WSA’s plans to introduce wingless sprintcar racing in Australia.
After what has been a lengthy negotiation between all parties concerned (WSA, the Sprintcar Control Council of Australia (SCCA) and NASR), positive moves were made by NASR to recognise WSA as an approved national racing category for Australian speedway.
The move still needs to be vetted by the SCCA, but talks between Matthews and the SCCA’s Peter Mitchell and John Kelly, has proved very positive with the last of the SCCA’s concerns being addressed by Matthews and his team at WSA which included minimum weights, and head and neck restraints.
These moves by the parties concerned now allow the imminent commencement of wingless sprints to begin competing here in Australia once sanctioned by the SCCA.
Matthews, the very happy WSA owner, spoke openly about the birth of a national wingless sprint category stating that it has been an arduous process formulating the rules and complying with insurance and safety obligations. Matthews was also quick to add that there are some variances to engine rules since the original launch of WSA, with the use of the current spec 372ci SCCA engine now being able to be used in the wingless category with the use of a detune kit. The kit includes venturi restrictors and the engines are to be rev limited to 6000 rpm. The use of an MC3 compound right rear tyre is also mandatory for the 372 powered cars. This use of the 372ci engine will cease in 2012, with all competitors then being required to use the self starting 410ci ‘crate’ engine supplied by WSA. This rule gives the opportunity for 372ci competitors to “run out” their 372ci engines then replace the unit with the ‘crate’ engine which will retail for not much more than the cost of a full refurbishment of a 372ci engine.
Matthews states. “The introduction of a more cost effective and controlled top line race category is long overdue in Australian speedway and all the major players (track operators, competitors and spectators) will all have their needs fulfilled with the introduction of wingless sprints.”
Matthews, the founder of the AMCA Nationals division, and now WSA, would like to thank the hard work of his team at WSA, members of the NASR board and the input from Peter Mitchell, John Kelly and Greg Foster from the SCCA. “Without the shared vision of all concerned, this would not be happening.” Says Matthews.
The fundamentals behind WSA include; • The use of factory produced sprintcar frames only, • A tyre rule applied to all four corners of the car, • The use of the self starting 410ci ‘crate’ engine producing 530hp and 510 ft-lb of torque, • The use of SCCA spec 372ci engines with venturi restrictors and with a 6000rpm rev limit, and • No throttle flash traction control or any other form of traction control.
