Nobody mentioned it, but Troy Rutherford came back Saturday Night and finished a strong 2nd place in the Main Event Saturday Night in the $2,000 to win VRA feature at Ventura after starting 6th on the tricky and slick track. Kevin Kierce rode the low grove for the whole 30 laps, while Troy ventured up top throughout the race to move forward, and Greg Taylor got 3rd from about 11th for his first start of the year. (ANd Troy won his heat).
As some may or may not know, Troy had been very ill this year with a blood disease and was in the hospital for some time. It was very serious, so it was a surprise for some in the stands to see him racing so soon. (Many were just happy that he was home safe). With a doctor's note to race, and a $2K to win race, Troy and his crew threw together a chassis last week and made it to the races hurridly.
Troy might not be everyone's favorite driver on the track or in the stands, but everyone know's he stands on the gas and he is a racer. He and his family is as dedicated to the sport, whether it be 360's or 410's, as anyone in the sport. And when given the opportunity, Troy can get the most out of the equipment. Not sure of the facts, but I think he won something like 7 of the last 9 VRA races at Ventura last year even on a Family budget racecar.
I know Troy would probably love to race a quality 410 ride, but there are just so many deep pocket owners out there. But Troy and HIS FAMILY, MOM, DAD, WIFE, etc, are true Saturday Night racers who just love the sport of (sprint car) racing and make the sacrifice to race whenever and where ever they can.
I am just glad Troy is Healthy, but to see him racing again is COOL!
Just watch out for those wicked slide jobs
If you get a chance come on out to Ventura Saturday, should be a good show with Midgets and Sprints.
