GP Development Night at Silver Dollar Speedway
(Chico, CA 3-31-08)...The opening round of Feather Falls Casino Championship point racing was canceled because of a steady rain that hovered around Chico last Friday. Hopefully, Mother Nature will stay away this upcoming Friday night, April 4, and allow us a chance to kick off the point racing season at the Silver Dollar Speedway.
Four divisions will be geared to go featuring the 410 sprint cars, wingless sprints, street stocks and dwarf cars. Front grandstand gate will open at 6 pm. Racing is scheduled to start at 7 pm. Adult general admission is $11.00. Seniors and Juniors are $9.00 and children are $5.00.
Gary Perkins has been a fixture at Silver Dollar Speedway for many years. Most fans recognize his company's name, GP Development, on the side of many sprint cars and dirt modified's. Drivers like Andy Forsberg and Duane Cleveland have all displayed the GP Development name on their cars. Yet, sponsorship hasn't been his only contribution at the race track. During the 2000 racing season at Silver Dollar Speedway, Perkins drove a dirt modified and finished 26th in the points. Not bad when you consider that year 64 drivers earned championship points in the division. Perkins started helping the Becker family around this same time at the speedway. Together they had a lot of success, first off in the dirt modified's and then graduating up to the sprint cars. In 2006, Perkins started his own team and hired Brad Sweet as his driver. This year Sweet is headed back to Indiana to race. Kyle Hirst is now the full-time driver of the #6 sprint car. “Gary's such a fun guy to be around,” said Hirst from their racing shop in Loomis. “We've got a great operation here and I am looking forward to winning some races this year for Gary.”
For the first time this season the street stocks, formerly called pure stocks, will hit the race track. Ed Kinkle, technical race coordinator, explains the change in names to allow some modifications to these race cars and allow a chance to get bigger car counts. “We have changed rules from pure to street stocks to allow a wider range of cars to compete at the speedway this year,” said Kinkle. “The past few years the cars counts have declined and this is an opportunity to allow more drivers to compete at out race track with the street stock rules.”
The traveling Dwarf Cars will also be on hand this Friday night. Their website is www.dwarfworld.com. The Dwarf cars are scaled copies of 1928 to 1948 vintage American coupes, sedans and trucks with the nostalgic look of early stock cars . They are powered by a motorcycle engine. The bodies are scaled down versions of full size cars. These drivers put on a great show and always provide door banging action.
The wingless sprints are also featured this weekend. Nearly 30 drivers are expected to compete during this night of racing.
Don't forget to watch the Silver Dollar Minute during the Thursday night edition of our local news on television channels 12 and 24 in Chico.
