Opening Night Sandbox victory could be key towards '08 Badger Midget title
By Bryan Gapinski New Richmond, Wis., March 24---Five of the past ten seasons, the opening night feature winner has gone onto claim the Badger Midget Series Championship. This Saturday Night March 29, the series opens their 72nd year of sanctioning midget auto racing at America's newest indoor motorsports facility, the Amsoil Sandbox Arena at Cedar Lake Speedway. The series will conclude their doubleheader weekend with a Sunday afternoon 50-lap feature.
Since the 1998 season opener, four drivers Dan Boorse ('98, '99), Aaron Fike ('02), Scott Hatton ('04) and last year's champion Brad Kuhn have used their opening night victories to springboard them towards the Badger Championship. Four other drivers Aaron Fiscus, Davey Ray, Chad DeSelle, and Danny Stratton have won opening night series features and are among the 30 entries excepted for the event.
Among the other drivers entered include: Jerry Coons Jr. who won 14 midget feature events last year on his way to claiming the USAC National Midget Series Title and National Midget Driver of the Year Championship. USAC Triple Crown Champion Dave Darland will be competing in the event driving the Hans Lein owned Spike/Ford-Esslinger#2.
The event will mark the first Badger sanctioned indoor event since January 22, 2000, when Fiscus won the event at the Milwaukee (Wis.) Arena. Five other entered drivers competed in that event including: Hatton, Ray, DeSelle, Mike Hess and David Gough. Winged outlaw karts and the Legends cars will also be competing during the evenings events.
