KRUSEMAN WINS CRA OPENER

Saturday, 09 February 2008

Perris, Calif...2006 USAC/CRA Champion Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif., made a late-race charge from the eighth starting spot to capture the 30-lap season opener Friday at the Perris Auto Speedway.

Driving his own Lucas Oil / Agromin No. 21k Viper, Kruseman's 15th season driving 410 c.i. sprint cars begins with his 87th West Coast sanction victory, pulling him to within 16 wins of Dean Thompson's all-time record.

"Everything just kind of went our way tonight. We've got a brand new Viper car and it was great to get a win for our new sponsor Lucas Oil," Kruseman said. "We came here tonight with four cars under our banner and the key is that I have the right people in the right places. Right now, I'm not required to do too much on the cars and can do a little bit more coaching with our driver development program. The biggest difference between this year and last year is that I can concentrate more on my car and just have fun."

Chad Boat made his USAC/CRA debut from the outside of the front row next to former series Rookie of the Year Blake Miller of Yorba Linda, Calif. Experience prevailed at the drop of the green flag with Miller putting his Jeff Gardner / Roy Miller Frieightlines No. 93 Sled into the lead.

Rip Williams started his 31st season behind the wheel of a sprint car from the seventh position and was battling for second-place on the second-lap when he flipped after tangling with the Bobby Martin / Weiler Farms No. 15 Maxim driven by R.J. Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) exiting turn-four. Sadly, Williams, who won the 2004 USAC/CRA title, suffered a broken left foot during a ride that included contact with Santa Maria, California's Danny Sheridan while his car was airborne.

Sheridan put his Kittle Motorsports / Pace Electronics No. 18 Stinger into the lead two laps after the restart. Once out front, Sheridan controlled the race and was even able to maintain his lead over Miller despite working lapped traffic.

At the halfway point of the event, Kruseman used his skill through lapped traffic to move into the third position. Things tighten-up four laps later with Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif., making it a four-car battle for the lead. Just when Sheridan appeared to have rebuilt a lead that was adequate to win the race, the caution flag flew for defending series champion Tony Jones who slowed to a stop with a flat tire.

Kruseman, who earlier was the fastest car in qualifying, moved ahead of Miller moments after the restart and quickly set his sights on "Showtime Sheridan." Kruseman eventually took the lead on lap-26 with a textbook slide-job that was secured exiting turn-two.

"Our problem was that we followed for too many laps and when we finally got that yellow (flag) it gave me the opportunity to observe the track a little better. I was able to see what else was out there and use it to my advantage. At the same time, I think the guys in front of me made a couple mistakes and lost their rhythm a little bit," Kruseman said after his 24th career USAC/CRA win.

Spencer took advantage of contact between Miller and Sheridan along the front-straight in the closing laps and was able to finish second in the Ron Chaffin / Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply No. 50 Maxim. Miller finished third with Sheridan and Johnson completing the top-five. Jimmy Crawford won "Hard-Charger" honors with his 18th to seventh-place drive.
