40th season on the horizon
Marysville- In advance of the 40th Anniversary season at Marysville Raceway Park we are looking for your help. Promoter Paul Hawes and this observer are looking for racers who still live in the area… or do you know where they may be now? We are also looking for your stories, and memories of events and happenings from the storied history of MRP. If you have photos, 8mm movies or other media to share, we want to know about it.
During the course of this season MRP will recognize and honor it’s heritage with 4 outstanding special events. On April 12th MRP will honor racers of the past with the 1st Annual Fallen Racers Memorial event. On Memorial Day (May 31) the Mel Hall Memorial will be presented for the 8th time. This race honors Hall who was instrumental in bringing top notch sprint car racing to MRP.
On August 2nd MRP will salute its 1st promoter, Cy Francis. At that time the track was called MMM Speedway, or “Triple M” as it came to be known. “Triple M” denoted the Marysville Modified Midgets, the premiere class at the speedway’s opening. The cageless, wingless open wheelers were forerunners of open wheel classes that include today’s versions of modified midgets, midgets and the mighty Sprint Cars. Pioneer promoter Cy Francis opened the gates 40 years ago and the MRP story began. Cy is no longer with us, but his grandson Ryan races weekly in the Mini Stock class. The 1st Cy Francis Memorial Race will be an event to remember.
On August 23rd the NARC Reunion will bring together all of the racers who have had a hand in creating the history of MRP. A special hospitality tent will welcome the racers who put MRP on the racing map. A special section in the grandstand will be saved for their enjoyment of the racing program. Each of the racers will be introduced and available for autographs and interaction with the fans during the evening.
