Galen, this is Cody Brewer. My grandpa was in town this weekend for family Christmas stuff and he was telling me about an old slush pit at 23rd and Eastern(Martin Luther King) that they used to race around. He said the name was Devil's Bowl Raceway. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks,

Cody

I ain't Galen but here is what I think you are talking about. The track was at N.E. 13th and Eastern and was a quarter mile dirt oval, ran jalopies from April through June of 1947. Hopefully Galen can finish the details.

Hey, Cody, looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks. Devil's Bowl, alternately called O'Hara Speedway for the brothers who ran it, was first located at NE 23rd and Eastern. It was sort of an oval road course, with some up and down hill sections and a lake in the middle. Roy Coleman, the black driver who did so well around here in the early 50's, was one of many who took a dip in that lake. They had a fatal in 1947 or 48 when a young man right out of the Navy flipped and was killed his second week out there. I'll post a picture or two on the history pages and you'll see why it was easy to get killed. The track moved further south around 1951 or '52 to the location David remembers....or read about. (David, you THAT old?) I don't think it ran too long at that site before the county and state stepped in and regulated it out of business. When I post the pictures I'll get the exact dates on this stuff, too.

Galen, thanks for the info! I knew if anybody would know, it would be you. For some reason, I am just now getting some old racing stories out of my grandpa!

Bill, I am not sure if we are headed to Manzy or not? After last years extravaganza, I am not real keen on going out there! But I am sure by mid-February, we will all be ready for some eighty degree weather and racing!

That was a nasty dump that you took. From a fan's standpoint, it was a great weekend of racing. We can't wait for this year. Made our travel plans Friday.

Hope to watch you out there. Good luck if you make the trip.

Bud....I'll post the pics on the Tidbits from the Past area of Oklahoma Tidbits. From this board, go to Main Site, then Tidbits from the Past...all the way over on the right side of the "buttons." I'm working on an article about the 1915 Indy car race in OKC and my office is a disaster area, but I'll post what I can find.
