Why are big WoO races, like the Husets races this weekend scored with only show up points? The reason I've seen mentioned before was because they are not "standard" WoO format. So what?
No matter the format, don't all the WoO drivers have to race the same competitors on the same track with the same format? Why should a driver's succeses or shortcomings at a WoO race against WoO drivers not affect their WoO point standings?
(Roughly speaking, because finding the correct points wasn't the easiest thing to do), before Husets this weekend, points leader David Gavel was leading Buddy Kofoid by 176 points. Over 4 races, Gravel finished 6th, 4th, 4th, 4th. Kofoid did better, 1st, 2nd,1st,3rd. So now, Gravel leads Kofoid by.... 176 points.
(Again, roughly speaking) if just the feature results were counted, the first and second place drivers would remain the same but be closer together. Six of the remaining eight would swap their places inthe points tally.
A driver could win everything in sight at the big, non-standard WoO races and not have a lot to show for it as far as points earned. Isn't that like giving out participation trophies?

I agree with you, but the teams advocated for this I believe. They feel like removing points from the equation allows them to run harder and not have to worry about wrecking or part failures. I'm not sure I buy it but I've heard Macedo talk about this specifically and that's the rationale he gave.

This is not a recent change, this rule about if it's not the normal World of Outlaws format, its show-up points only. I know I had a discussion with a World of Outlaws official about this, I would say in the mid 90s. So it's been in place for a long time.

I know it's been in place for as long as I can remember. I wonder if it remains a good policy in a changing racing scene. As more big races pop up and become show-up points races, does that mean that the championship is based on competitors being careful with their equipment on less important(?) races?
