i like the playoff system.  i'm not sure how it worked out yesterday...but most years the champion was decided before the last race in the old format...and i wouldn't have been watching.  it accomplishes the goal of making things interested right up until the end which is what the fans said they wants.

that's the point i'll focus on since this is a sprint car forum.  i get tired of race fans at every level constantly complaining about things like point systems and formats.  we've forgotten how to just go and enjoy a race.  i was at martinsville last week and didn't get worked up about the things that happened.  what did everyone expect?  everyone lost sight of what blaney did which was pretty spectacular for the 2nd year in a row.

i'm always amazed to see old photos from race tracks like williams grove where it seems like a million people were there.  same with nascar where sometimes the leader was laps ahead.  we're spoiled in how many things we get to see compared to those days.

In 2003 when Matt Kenseth won his first championship, 7.3 million people tuned in despite the fact he clinched it the previous week.

Yesterday? 2.9 million.

The last 2 years were the worst average finish by a Nascar Cup champion----2 years in a row. The past 2 years the winner of the Cup were at best the 10th or 12th place cars all year. If they want to add excitement to the racing and the crowning of a champion, then at least have the right guys fighting for the title on the last day. The system is broken.

I dont like the playoff system in racing but it seems to me Nascar has tried to implement stick and ball formats onto the race track. In hockey an low place team occasionally turns it on in the playoffs and upsets the teams who won all year. Many people get excited by the underdog victory and jump on the bandwagon of the come from behind team. So the playoffs are designed to give that low rank team a chance and that often attracts new fans for a month or two. Upsets in playoffs work in sports where one team faces another team, especially in a best of 7 format because the potential upset simmers on the sports broadcast for up to 2 weeks. It doesnt work when you have 4 or 16 teams all facing each other in a 3 hour contest.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!
