i'll make this an ascoc weekend thread by saying the race at sharon was incredible at the end despite being the type of one lane race track people always seem to complain about. it made me think about a few things related to track prep.
-great races often require unexpected circumstances...like the late caution that bunched everyone up. hobaugh would have won by several seconds in a snooze fest without the caution. you're not going to get that every race.
-great races require drivers willing to make gutsy moves. the move by marks in 1 with 2 to go to take the lead between hobaugh and henry was incredible. i made my son turn off his youtube crap to watch it 3 or 4 times. marks was also willing to diamond the corner to get a run underneath guys.
sometimes you have to...you know...be a race car driver and not just blow past somebody on a wide track with multiple grooves.
-great races are more likely on a shorter track. it's why i like bull rings. catching lapped traffic makes a one lane track awesome. i complain about williams grove a lot...but they put on their best shows when the races stay green so lapped traffic gets involved. it takes at least 10-15 laps to catch the rear though because the track is bigger.
long story short...there's more to putting on a great race than track prep. credit the drivers last night for putting on a great and clean show.
