STELLAR FIELD FOR THURSDAY'S 67TH "TURKEY NIGHT G.P.; 98-LAP FEATURE HONORS J.C. AGAJANIAN Monday, 19 November 2007
A field of 60-plus Midgets is expected for Thursday night's 67th running of one of America's most traditional short-track races - the "Turkey Night Grand Prix." This year's event features a unique 98-lap feature, honoring the late long-time race organizer J.C. Agajanian. Lucas Oil USAC Western Sprint Cars and USAC California Pavement Ford Focus Midgets are also on the bill at the "tripleheader."
National and Western Midget point leaders Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. and Johnny Rodriguez of Elk Grove, Calif. will put the finishing touches on respective 2007 USAC championships, while Coons' car owner Wilke/Pak Motorsports of Milwaukee, Wisc., will lay claim to the National car owner title. The Western car owner title is up for grabs between Mitchell Motorsports, owners of Rodriguez' car, and Lance Pierovich, owner of Scott Pierovich's entry. Only three points separate the two entering the race,
Billy Wease of Noblesville, Ind. is back to defend his 2006 race victory, while former race winners Jason Leffler (1999 and 2005), Bobby East (2004) and Dave Steele (2001 and 2003) are also in the field.
Throw in Indianapolis 500 veteran Davey Hamilton, USAC Triple Crown Champ Dave Darland, USAC Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones, former USAC Champ Tracy Hines, NASCAR vets Bryan Clauson, Kasey Kahne and Josh Wise and you have a wide-open chase for the victory.
Stephanie Mockler of Westfield, Ind., the winningest female driver in USAC history, is also among entered drivers. Her father Warren won the 1986 "Turkey Night" classic.
