Tuesdays with TMAC – Strong Finish!
(Bill W) November 6, 2007 – Terry McCarl finished the 2007 World of Outlaws season the way he started it, with a strong finish. A charge from 16th to 7th in the WoO season finale at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte, North Carolina was just what the doctor ordered, in what has been a tough season at times for TMAC.
The three-day extravaganza started with two sets of time trials on Thursday night, which set the lineups for Friday and Saturday's shows. With the top sixteen drivers inverted out of the 48 assembled, the quality of the competition put an emphasis on the two-lap procedures. As luck would have it, TMAC timed 17th quick, not once, but twice! "It was like kissing my sister twice in a row, no offense to her," he says. "One spot short two nights in a row, but it's better than 38th or something. We know what that's like too. It could have been worse with all the good cars there."
17th quick or quick time of the night didn't mean anything when the real racing commenced on Friday night. "It wouldn't have mattered on Friday," says TMAC. "We went out in the heat race and broke a throttle linkage, then in the B main, we broke a rear-end." The night resulted in a disappointing DNQ, but the season was not done yet.
The all too familiar refrain didn't affect the determination of the team heading into the finale. "We changed some things on Saturday, went out for the heat, and the car just wasn't very good," says the Altoona, Iowa driver. "We pretty much changed everything around on the car for the B, and it was really good. I was really happy. I knew when we pushed off for the B that the car was good. I think we won by over a straightaway."
The B main win wasn't televised by the Speed Channel, who was airing the event live, but the man known as "TV Terry" this year, wasn't done. "I was pretty jacked about the feature coming from 16th," he says. "Everybody we passed was pretty good. We changed motors from Friday to Saturday, and that was actually a motor that (crewman) Troy (Renfro) changed a cam in and it really ran well for us."
A stoppage with ten to go, slowed TMAC's progress considerably. "Actually, the red with about ten laps to go, hurt us," he remembers. "I had just passed (Jason) Sides (for 7th) for good, and I had to go back behind him on the restart. If we could have stayed in front of him, I'm sure we could have been in there for a top five. Jason was running a really good line and he came from a ways back too (12th). I was just a little tight behind him in traffic into the corners. When we got by him, we were coming."
The seventh place finish was a much needed positive heading into the offseason. "It was a good way to finish the year," says TMAC. "We had a really good car, and Tyler, the crew and I worked together really well. Johnn Cressman was also helping this weekend. The folks at Charlotte did a really good job with the track for all the events on Saturday. We were a little worried about the track being rough, but it was great. The guys at World Racing Group did an awesome job of promoting the event, and it went off really well. Maybe next year, they'll up the purse!"

Al in Ohio asks: You've had a number of motor/chassis combinations this year. Have you decided what you're going into next year with?
TMAC Answers: We have a pretty good idea. We'll all be meeting this week, and get a game plan going for next year. We probably won't change much. We'll probably go with Eagle chassis and Don Ott has been doing a good job for us. We may change some combinations. Troy is pretty sharp on the engines and camshafts. I look forward to the 4 "T's", Tod, Terry, Tyler and Troy!
