|
There was a odd sprint car built by an engineer in the late 1980.s. The top wing was more like an airplane wing, Long and narrow. Wing was outlawed after it took down overhead wires at Knoxville.
Anyone with pictures of car and who built and drove it?

That car was no joke even though it looked so weird. That thing set fast time at a WoO show at Devils Bowl and was only .04 off of the track record.

I don't think it ever
took down the over head string of lights at Knoxville, but I do believe that they had to raise them so that didn't happen. The wing was carbon fiber and shattered like a vinyl album when he tipped it over in 1985 or 86.
It was referred to as the "computer car" in the grandstands that year, not sure what the announcers called it.

We were at Knoxville that year and said if sprint cars ever got that ugly, we would quit going. They didn't and we still go.

any one with a picture of Kenny Welds sprint car he built when he got out of prison. Radiatore mounted on side, left exh header pointed to front, top wing had about 100 adjustments [plus alot more.

I'm all for thinking outside the box but, wow some of these are hideous, especially Tommy Johnson's car.

I thought they called the Tommy Johnson "computer car" - the MOOSE - because of the wing looking like antlers. There were a lot of innovative ideas in this car. And if my memory serves me correctly the first time out at Knoxville he set 2nd fastest time that Wnight at the Nationals. I recall that "Open Wheel" had an article titled "Who in the hell is Tommy Johnson?" since they had never heard of him before. This car should be in the Knoxville Museum for a bit. These guys also devised a really fast sports car that was declared illegal, even tho' it fit into all of the rules at the time. I guess they were too fast then, too. Interesting ideas.. and at least they were thinking "outside of the box".
