DARLAND WINS INDIANA SPRINT WEEK FINALE AT HAUBSTADT
WINDOM TAKES SECOND INDIANA SPRINT WEEK TITLE

     Haubstadt, IN - July 28, 2018 -  Tri-State Speedway hosted the Grand
Finale for the 2018 NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week.  The
seventh and final event sanctioned by the USAC-AMSOIL Sprint Car
Series provided a tight three car battle in the feature.  Six of the
42 drivers present were also challengers for the Indiana Sprint Week
Crown.  A Bridgeport rocking chair was waiting for the champion.
There was unparallel excitement for a full house to watch.
Twenty-four cars would start the 30 lap sprint car feature.  Sprint
Week points leader Chris Windom sat on the outside pole and needed a
fifth place or better finish to wrap up the championship.  The two
closest rivals for the title would start on the pole and sixth.
The race favorites were all in the first few rows.  Fireworks
exploded above the parade lap and after the smoke cleared, the green
flag fell over a highly charged field.
Chris Windom grabbed the lead with Chase Stockon powering up to take
second.  Dave Darland was third.  The pace was rapid and the green
stayed out for 14 laps.  The yellow appeared for Daron Clayton’s
stopped car.  It was taken to the work area with a flat rear tire.
Three cars got together on the restart.  After another restart Thomas
Meseraull and Robert Ballou were involved in an accident on lap 18
after which both cars were towed to the pits with heavy damage.
It was decision time!  Veteran Dave Darland made his first major move
in sliding by Chase Stockon in turn one to take second.  On the 24th
lap Darland also passed Windom to take the lead.  The result would be
another career victory for the People’s Champion.  Windom would
finish second.  Chase Stockon was third.  Fastest Qualifier Kevin
Thomas Jr. and C.J. Leary would round out the top five.
Post race ceremonies blanketed the front stretch.  Darland was the
first to take the microphone. “ A win at Haubstadt.  Never thought
I would say that.  Tonight was great.  Unbelievable!”  It was the
USAC driver’s second win during Sprint Week this year.
The second place finish earned  Chris Windom a second Indiana Sprint
Week title.  â€œThat was the longest race of my life.  Dave was super
fast.  The 36 car was a little better than us.”  Really consistent
runs resulted in the title.  Windom finished in the top five in every
feature but one during the week.
Brady Bacon was the hard charger for the feature.  He just missed a
top ten finish in moving up from 21st to 11th.  Justin Grant led the
second five which included Kyle Cummins, Josh Hodges, Tyler Courtney,
and Stephen Schnapf.
The four heat races were completed with the winners being Thomas
Meseraull, Tyler Courtney, Stephen Schnapf, and Chris Windom.
Critter Malone won the C Main and was working on capturing a transfer
spot in the Semi Feature when he spun.  Josh Hodges won that last
chance event.  There was one red flag in the Semi when Dakota
Jackson’s car flipped on the front straightaway.  Kendall Ruble
would finish sixth to become the final transfer from the Semi.
Robert Ballou and Isaac Chapple took the two feature provisional
start opportunities.

The UMP Modifieds competed in a 25 lap feature.  Brandon McDowell of
Boonville, IN, was the victor.  The victory was worth $1,000!
McDowell used a high line around the quarter mile to lead lap after
lap.  Fast qualifier Zach Fair challenged but would finish second.
Dustin Beck used a last lap pass to take third after starting 12th on
the field.  Trent Young finished fourth with Don Brantley fifth.
Zack Fair and Dave Beck won the two modified heat races.  Beck was
involved in a five car mishap at the start of the feature and he was
one of the drivers whose feature efforts ended early
The next event scheduled to be run at Tri-State Speedway will be on
August 11th.  That event is the annual Hoosier Sprint Nationals.  The
MSCS Sprints will compete in a
$ 5,000 to win feature.  The Modified cars will be competing for $600 to
win in their feature.  In addition to the usual classes of cars for this
event, the IMCA Racesaver Sprints will be making their first ever
appearance at Tri-State.  It will be a Saturday night triple header!
