Mark Dobmeier took a hard ride last night at Dacotah Speedway.  Luckily he is ok.....the top left rollbar looks like it snapped at the weld

I saw that last night and thought about posting, but didn’t want to until I knew Dobs was ok. He is thank goodness.  As well it was his team posting the pictures. He was very lucky. What is it with compromised cages this year. It’s getting scary. Watching the video, and I have been to that track, obviously no concrete wall for cage to hit, such as recent tragedies. However one cannot see what there was in or by the fence the 13 eventually hit that stopped the car. It’s quite concerning, even though Mark walked away and, in a picture in the comments on the Facebook post, he was smiling with fans in the pits after the races. Gravel, Johnson (Godspeed) and now Dobs, not to mention those we don’t know about. Just with tasking those 3 compromised cages resulted in 30% of those involved perishing. I don’t know the answer, but changes are in order this offseason. I know that seems like putting it off when we want them now, but without research, quick knee jerk reactions sometimes don’t produce intended results.

After watching the replay, it looks to me that the first impact just beyond turn 1 was probably the cause of the cage damage. He flew over turn 1 and beyond the drop off of the backside banking, making it a very heavy initial impact to the topside of that car. You can see how the car falls downwards, almost like dropping off a table, after clearing the turn 1 banking -  which had to add a considerable amount of force on impact.  I can't see anywhere else in the replay where there is impact with the top of the rollcage that could cause that type of damage.  Certainly a scary accident though.  Sounds like he's pretty stiff and sore yet - but of course he was up and signing autographs in the pits afterwards.

I'm going to add something here that I hope is not taken in poor taste because it's not meant to nor am I insensitive to recent events. I care about the sport and the drivers. But one thing that seems to be ignored, or simply not understood by alot of fans is that there is only one or two people who know what happened in any crash and that's the driver or drivers involved, all else is a perspective from the outside of the fence, and again, I'm not trying to sound like I have some insider knowledge that nobody has access to, I'm a fan. But what is said in the grandstands about a crash is pure speculation. Only the drivers know what happened. Having said that, there have been 3 crashes recently, with Dobs being the most recent, that perfectly display where not to pass a competitor in a sprint car. If any driver puts themselves between a spinning right rear of the car they're passing and the wall/ouside of the track and they do it on a straightaway, they are knowingly putting themselves in the most dangerous situation they can possibly put themslves in. The driver in front in most cases has no idea that the other is there, nor should they be expected to concede the position because the other guy is "faster". It hurts my guts to say it but the first incident was at Beaver Dam and we all know what happened, the second was the following week at Knoxville with Schatz/Jeffreys, and now Dobs. Yes, it happens every week and almost every lap all around the country and sometimes they don't crash and other times they do. When they do, it's usually horrific. My point is to all of you who may not know, and may think that one guy moved up, or crowded the other, please try to understand the drivers perspective before pointing fingers. With the Nationals coming up and the best drivers in the country coverging at the same place, take a closer look at where the veterans make, and dont make their passes and you may gain a different perspective. These guys aren't complete nutjobs with their tongues hanging out rying to go as fast as they can. Each lap they run they're making split second, calculated decisions.

I don’t think your reply was in poor taste. But I don’t think anyone here on this particular thread is questioning, debating or criticizing the accident or how it happened. Instead , being concerned about cages collapsino in a number of cases this season.

Paydirt28- I am a bit puzzled by you comment about watching veteran drivers at Nationals make & do not make their passes. All three incidents you referenced were veteran drivers trying to make basically the same pass. I just think it is an unfortunate coincidence that there have been three very similar racing accidents this year.

Understood. I was going a little different direction with it but best left alone. Over and out.
