20-21 second laps at the “speed palace” is not a rocket.

Haha... this might be the most untrue statement of the year on HH. They routinely run mid 15 to 17 second laps around Port Royal in hot laps and qualifying (track record is a 15.011). Its one of the largest dirt track I've seen sprint cars on in person. Just as a disclaimer, I live 12 hours away from Port. So this is coming from a "Non Posse"
Real race cars don't have fenders...

In hot laps they have been in the mid 16 second brackets for months and that is the fastest unless it rains on raceday. This is the only way they hit the 15 second bracket.....raining on raceday. Every week for the last few months before warmups are over the track is getting black or is as black as a hat.....it is called the slip and slide.
It the features is where you see the 20+ seconds laps. That is what he was talking about. They need to rename this track the "Slow Palace" since they don't have a clue how to prepare that track. I live 15 minutes from this asphalt track.
Every week there should be a few cars in the 15 second bracket in warmups. But Stimely and Swartz the track preparers think you can't have a good race when it is that fast. They are wrong and I point it out to them everytime it rains on raceday and the track is fast!
Let's go Sprint Car Racing!
Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

Go to YouTube and search "Bristol Speed Trials" and you can see what I'm talking about. I was accurate on Jason Blonde turning 13.2 second lap, and actually it was 13.24 seconds. He was .002 seconds faster than one of the winged supermods and the lap speed was 144.87 according to the video. Still looking for results from the asphalt sprint car race they held there, which I believe they said was the Extreme Series.
I would also add that what Sammy did was more impressive in most ways. I believe they graded out some of the banking for the dirt sprints whereas these other drivers were able to use the full banking.

Jojo Helberg turned a 12.699 second lap at the Winchester half mile in Indiana. Pretty sure that is the "World half mile" record.

The thing to keep in mind with the older speeds being bantered about, is what were the tracks declaring for distance? That can lead to highly inflated speeds based on times. That practice doesn't fly these days with distance measuring of the tracks being what it is.
