LANGE WINS SECOND STRAIGHT CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT MAIN!

(Torrance, CA, May 10, 2018) Fifteen-year-old Aiden Lange erased any doubt about who is the hottest lightning sprint driver on the Pacific Coast when he led all 25-laps to win his second straight USAC/California Lightning Sprint Car main event last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway.  In addition to it being his second straight CLS win, it was his third victory in four starts in 2018.

Lange, who lives in Lakewood, got off to an inconspicuous start on the night when he timed in eighth fastest in the 22-car field.  Quick time went to local racer Cody Nigh of Camarillo when he stopped the clocks at the beachside oval with a lap of 12.683.  Palmdale youngster Eric Greco was second quick with a time of 12.759 and Kiwi Alexander was third at 12.858.

Lange continued to lull the competition into a false sense of security when he came home third in the second heat race behind Ventura’s Robb Pelmear and five-time series champion Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita.  Jeff Dyer of Bermuda Dunes and Chino’s Pat Kelley captured the other two heat races.

With the preliminaries out of the way, it was time for Lange to shine in the Langeford Farms/Uncle Brad Motorsports/Kopp's Custom Guitars/Randal Z Warranty Service/Replika Maschinen/Chris's Precision Machine/JDR Graphics/T-Shirts by Timeless/Jim Ryan/EMI Henchcraft/Suzuki GSXR 1000 #13x.  With his first CLS win the previous week in Bakersfield behind him, Lange had good odds on making it two in a row with his outside front row starting spot.  Kelley was inside of him on the front row with Dyer and Lakeside’s Brent Sexton in row two.  Row three was made up of CLS champions Michnowicz and Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley.  Alexander and Nigh were in the fourth row.

When the green flag waved to start the 25-lap main, Lange immediately burst into the lead and he would stay there for the entire race.  Kelley, who won a main event at Ventura a couple of years ago, was second on the start, but was relegated back to third when Sexton drove around him before the end of the first circuit.  Michnowicz was fourth and Dyer was fifth at the conclusion of the first lap.

15-year-old or not, Sexton was not going to let the kid walk off with the main event without a fight and he was trying to sweep around the young leader by the end of the second lap.  Lange was equal to the challenges and by lap five, had a two-car length lead.  While Lange was building his lead on the sixth lap, Michnowicz briefly turned the heat up on Kelley for third but was unable to get by.

Leader Lange was up to lapped traffic on the seventh lap and that allowed Sexton to make up some ground.  Likewise, it was allowing Kelley and Michnowicz to get closer to second place Sexton.  Once lapped traffic cleared for the leader, he once again opened some breathing room between himself and Sexton.

Things stayed clean and green until a three-car tangle at the start of lap 16 that resulted in Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes flipping at the start-finish line.  Nunes car came down on all four wheels and the yellow flag came out.  Not only was he uninjured, but he was also able to restart.

The restart with 10-laps to go was set to have the top four the same way they had been since the first lap.  However, on one of the caution laps, Michnowicz exited the track and drove back to the pits with mechanical ills.  He was done for the night and subsequently lost the point lead.

Lange once again powered away when the green flew.  Sexton was still not going to give up and reeled the leader back in and was on his rear end as they flashed across the line with five laps left.

Lapped traffic again came into play as the laps wound down, but Lange handled it with the savvy of a seasoned veteran.  He raced under the checkered flag with lapped cars in front of and beside him and Sexton glued to his rear end.  Kelley ended up third.  2010 champion Kramer and Nigh had engaged in a tremendous battle for fourth over the last ten laps with the spot going to Kramer.

“That was awesome,” the excited teen told the crowd after winning the race.  “We are three for four right now.  Four races and three wins.  The same thing happened at Placerville earlier this year.  I held him (Sexton) off.  This is really cool, really awesome.”

This may sound redundant, but one of the Sexton siblings was the main event “Hard Charger.”  This time it was Dalton who started 18th and finished 10th.  In the first three races of the year, Dalton and his brother Grant have been the “Hard Charger” every night.

Michnowicz dropping out of the main saw a big shakeup in the championship standings.  Dyer is the new point leader and is 11 ahead of Kramer.  Brent Sexton is third and is only 15 points behind Dyer.  Michnowicz, who had been the point leader since the first race, dropped back to fourth.  Lange is fifth.

The CLS takes this week off before getting back on the track at the Jim Squire Memorial at the Barona Speedway on May 19th.
