5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals
Rnd # 5 Nov 24, 2007
Harrah, Oklahoma - OK Corral Indoor Arena

Derrick Hawkins Takes Outlaw Kart DFC – Smokey Russell takes Outlaw Kart Main – Stanton takes Open Mowers – Dodson wins Jr. Sprints

Ryan Early takes Quick Break Phillips 66 OPQ DFC – Damron wins Open Pro Quad A Feature

The fifth round for the Quads, Karts and Hot Rod Mowers of the 14 race 5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Short Track had a cheering crowd on hand. Outlaw Karts took center stage and ran for the AMP / Quick Break Phillips 66 / 7-UP Dash For Cash race of the night.

Go Fast Motorsports entry Derrick Hawkins out-gunned the field of five Outlaw Karts, to take home half of the 50/50 Ticket jackpot. Then Open Pro Singles Motorcycle DFC winner Scott Koonce drew the lucky ticket and none other than Derrick Hawkins mom won the other half of the money. This makes three times that has happened where the DFC winner’s mom or race vehicle owner has won the AMP 50/50 Ticket Jackpot. We switched who drew the lucky ticket and it still ended up with a winner’s relative taking the jackpot home. Talk about Luck!

Thanks to KIRC Radio, 104.7 The Planet Radio and newly acquired K-FOX radio from Eufaula, plus 107 in Stillwater for boosting ticket sales over last year’s holiday race at the historic barn. Big thanks to Frank Bardaro, Red Daley-Daley's Speed Shop, Patrick Prescott, Boyd Maxwell-Maxwell Oil and others for the new “Double Barrel Stove.” We are working on building "Double Barrel Stove #2 this week.

Folks in the pits and the bleachers appreciated the heat from the new unit. Winter temps welcomed those in attendance, but the barn heated up when the action packed exciting night of passing, crashing and racing for the quads at the historic OK Corral Indoor Arena Barn hit the track.

Hometown racer Ryan Early’s took the win in the Phillips 66 Quick Break Dash for Cash, but fell short later on, allowing Charles Damron the win in the Open Pro A Feature Main. Early, from Harrah finished third in the Feature. Damron led the 10 lap A Main from the green, with Early in tow. Early fell back to third on lap 6 when Jakus Lee took over second spot. They finished in that order.

Ada, Oklahoma Gary Rhodes defending AMP OWN champ in the 250 and Open Quad classes has his hands full again Saturday night in the open pro, after winning the 250 Pro Quad class. Rhodes changed his setup as the track went from tacky to slick and to a rubber down state at nights end. Rhodes said following the race “ I must of gone the wrong direction with my setup, I learned something tonight about the track surface, and I know now how to correct for it.” Champ Rhodes picked up a fifth place finish in the Open Pro Quad class, Early continues to lead the points in that division. Early now leads by a narrow 11-point margin with 9 rounds of competition left in the 14 race series.

The Open Amateur class was one of the best races of the night for the ATVs. Race fans witnessed the hotly contested race once again unfold at record pace. Chis Fox returned for competition, but found him finishing sixth in the main, where he normally places first. Billy McKinney got the hole-shot and led the thing from the green with Donnie Foster in hot pursuit. Stacy Chance followed the leaders to pick up third. This finish provided the fourth rider to win a round of competition in this class. Winners during this year’s season in the Open A Quad class include Chris Fox, Daniel McQuire, Nico Lee and Billy Mckinney.

In the Blaster division Evan Edgender tasted his first victory of the season defeating Neeco Mercado and three-time winner Nathan Wells out of Newcastle, Oklahoma. Kyle Roberts last seasons champ took the win in the 85 B Quad class over Logan Yelton. Yelton retains the points lead with a comfortable margin after round #5.

Ryan Neighbors fell just short of the win in the A main Kart B class as Kyler Damron took off and led it green to checkered. This makes it two in a row for Kyler Dramon. The Jr 1 division witnessed Corbin Snyder coming back to take his second win of the series. Snyder defeated Jackson Walker and Quade Johnson to take the victory lap at the OK Corral. In Jr 2 it was Kinzer Edwads with five wins in a row, a perfect score for the South Coffeyville, Oklahoma based racer. Edwards winning streak in the RWYB class came to an end as Smokey Russell put his #1 Kart on the point in the RW”YB Trophy class.

The new Non-Wing Jr. Sprint division picked up the pace and grew again with an additional entry. Winner for the third points round for this class was first time winner Cord Dodson from Cyril, Oklahoma. Dodson started inside third row, and moved up to first on the second lap passing new-comer to the series Caleb Faris to take the lead. Last round winner Grady Chandler passed Faris to finish second with Fairs placing third and Blake Prescott taking fourth place in the only two-stroke powered machine in the division.

Hot Rod Mowers put on another big show for the fans, but this time with more passing than crashing. When the checkered came out it was Michael Horjochee two time winner taking the win again in the Singles division and four time winner Tony Stanton winning the Twins division.

The growing sponsor list for the series includes, Light Shoes, Cycle 1, Atwoods Ranch and Home, Daley’s Speed Shop, FMF of So. California, Twin Air Filters, Moto Master Brake Systems, 7 UP, Ozarka Water, Frank’s Trailers, Daddy Hinkles Steaks, Jamil’s Steak House, Marriott Lawton, Holiday Inn MWC, Quick Break Phillips 66, Oklahoma Carpet and Tile, A&A Yamaha, Country Boy Stores, Harbor Freight Tools and many more.

Next round: Dec 8, 2007 at the OK Corrral Indoor Arena – All Students from area schools tickets will be just five bucks. Kids from Harrah and Davenport Schools admitted free to bleachers with School ID or recent Report Card.

The late Merle "Curley" Sutton lived in Ohio in his yonger days,
and worked at the Indian factory. Curley was a test rider for
the factory, and worked in the assembly plant for a number
of years. Curley raced Dirt Track motorcycles and was injured
in a race when struck by another machine during a 1/2 mile event.
He retired from racing motorcycles, and moved into the
position of shop owner, race team owner and later race promoter.

Mike Sherman of Tulsa, Oklahoma is shown here in front
of Curley Sutton’s Indian Matchless motorcycle dealership
in Tulsa on the Matchless G-50 he rode in the AMA sanctioned
3-star motorcycle races at Winfield, Kansas on May 12, 1963.

Curley was insturmental in creating and keeping
places to race Dirt Track motorcycles once he arrived
in Oklahoma. He owned a rare Matchless G-50 that has
stories told about it to this day. He also owned two very
fast 750 Norton Dirt Trackers that were ridden by riders from
Kansas at the Oiled 1/2 Mile track at the John Zink Ranch
located near Skiatook, Oklahoma. That track is now under Lake Skiatook. Zink had two tracks there, one was a 1/2 mile
oval asphalt track used to test his Indy Cars.

Curley also promoted races at the Tulsa Ramblers
scrambles track which was owned by the late Dutch Myers
of the Myers Harley Davidson fame. That track was located
near 68th and Memorial in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Woodland
Hills Mall is today. The Scrambles track featured right and
left hand turns, cool bowl banked corners a jump and a long
straight. I have not seen a track like it since it closed.

Curley promoted races at Dr. Dean's Thunderbird Raceway
near Foyil, Oklahoma, and at that same time he promoted
races at the Buddy Cagle Speedway in Vera, Oklahoma.

Curley and his late wife Fran were inseperable for years.
Fran performed all the maintenance work on Curley's race
bikes when they traveled together on the circuit. From
washing out filters to oil changes, Fran was quite the
Crew Chief for Curley. They operated Curley's Indian and
Matchless Motorcycle Sales in downtown Tulsa.

After she passed away in the late 1960's Curley met Cherry
Forrester, who he married and they lived near Turley, Oklahoma.
Curley operated Custom Cycles Sales and Service which was located
near downtown Tulsa then moved to the Restless Ribbon on
Brookside. the first store on the Ribbon was near the
Michelin Tire Dealership, then at 41st and Peoria, later
moved it to Skiatook, Oklahoma in an old Ford Dealership
building, then later to the T in the road at 56th Street
North and Utica. That became his last motorcycle shop location
before his passing away.

We will be honoring Curley Sutton, his involvement
and lifetime passion for Dirt Track racing Saturday
December 8, 2007. Come join us in celebration of this
man and his achievements.

Bill Tucker of Tulsa, Oklahoma

Curley was a master at repairing Magnetos, which were used
to control the spark on most racing machines of that era.
Magnetos are still used today in general commercial aviation
and on Sprint Cars, Top Fuel Dragsters, and other
forms of motorsports. Curley owned a racing Matchless G-50
which ran at Daytona for several years, later
Herb "Hoo Doo" Howard raced it at the Road Races held there
in March of each year during Bike Week.

Curley was quite a master mechanic, owned a 1/2 dozen
large double stacked tool boxes full of special and factory
tools for all brands of motorcycles. He owned complete hand
tools in SAE American, Whitworth and British Standard,
and Metric ISO. He owned a Sunnen Valve grinding machine
and of course his full line of Magneto repair diagnostic
and repair equipment of which his "Growler" was the most famous.

Anyone that has stories they remember about Curley Sutton is encouraged to post them here.

Sorry Amp, ORA Banquet is same night. Hopefully they'll cut it short so we can attend.

Save us a seat.

We publish our dates for the next season at the last race of the Indoor Series in April of every year. With so many tracks and events happening in Oklahoma in the motorsports arena it is next to impossible to schedule around everone.

i

Hard for us to schedule around other motorsports functions as we also try to schedule around two other Indoor Race series in Oklahoma. One weekend there were five Indoor Races happening in Oklahoma on the same Saturday night. We had a record crowd and number of participants that night. We will be running Saturday night Dec 29 which is also the night of heat races for another Indoor race in Oklahoma. They do not offer classes for Youth Quads, Hot Rod Mowers or Motorcycles.

There are several awards banquets happening this weekend, I will have to miss Port City's as I will be producing the races in Harrah. However, I would rather watch exciting live racing anyday than sit through an awards dinner. Smile

Motorcycle Results - Quads, Karts - Mowers to follow

Will have the entire Karts, Quads, Mowers and full results up tomorrow if I can find power and internet connections. Ice Storm is very bad in Oklahoma over 500,000 businesses and homes without power at this time. Sorry for the delay guys.

5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals - 3rd Annual Curley Sutton Memorial
Rnd # 6
Harrah Oklahoma - OK Corral Indoor Arena

Duval wins Curley Sutton Memorial Open Pro Singles Main Event

Ryan Neighbors takes win in B Karts

109 Entries competed during the sixth round of the 14 race 5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Short Track series held in conjunction with the Curley Sutton Memorial developed into a memorable event for all. Old Pro Joe Duvall returned from a brief retirement to do battle in honor of his good friend Curley Sutton. Sutton sponsored Gary Nixon, Fred Nix, Herb Hoo Doo Howard and Joe Duvall during his long life of promoting and sponsoring racers in Dirt Track motorcycle racing. Duvall teamed up with Pro Crew Chief Garry Baehler for the shoot out at the OK Corral. Duvall and Baehler improved the setup on the CRF-450 Honda from qualifying and stepped up their performance for the A Main.

Curley Sutton began his career as a test rider for the Indian Motorcycle Company, and later suffered injury in Ohio during a Dirt Track race. Curley loved motorcycle racing and later as an Indian, Matchless and BSA dealer he also wore hats as team owner, and track promoter. Sutton promoted Motorcycle Dirt Track races at the John Zink 1/2 Mile dirt and asphalt oval tracks, in Catoosa at the Tulsa Rambler's Motorcycle Club track, Tulsa Oil Capitol M/C Club Scrambles track near 68th and Memorial, Vera, Oklahoma at Buddy Cagle Speedway and in Foyil, Oklahoma at Dr. Dean's Thunderbird Speedway.

Larry Montague remembered some Sutton philosophy, once at Enid Montague told Sutton the track was so dusty he could not see, Sutton with an arm over Larry's shoulder told Montague, "It's not dusty up front, Montague." Another time Sutton advised Montague he was only doing two things wrong, "turning it off too soon and turning it back on too late." Dignitaries of Dirt on hand for the Memorial were Scott Adams, Vernon Epperson, Joe Duvall, Garry Baehler, and Orbin Adams.

Chelsea, Oklahoma based Joe Duvall riding a Garry Baehler prepared CRF-450 Honda went on to take the final checks in the Open Pro Singles A Main event. Alma, Arkansas rider Justin Thurman riding the Calvert prepared Yamaha won the AMP 7-UP Curley Sutton Memorial DFC, but fell short in the A Main when Duvall found the set up and went on to etch his name in the record book for the historic main event victory.

It was Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Justin Elswick a previous two three time AMP OWN Champ winning both the Open A and the 125/250 A contest. Elswick suffered from mechanical problems early during qualifying riding the Dopps prepared Honda, but managed to come back strong in the features. Elswick's competition Saturday night included Peyton Simpson and brother Dylan Simpson rounding out the top three in the both the 125/250 A and the Open A class.

Edmond based Wesley Collins continued to wow the crowd by repeating his winning streak and taking home three first place trophies for the night. Noah Prescott remains 2nd in points in the PW A division behind class leader Collins.

Tony Opichka led Sebastin Ellingsworth and Haley Harmon to the finish line taking the final checks and the win in the PW BB defeating all challengers. Two “My First Race” trophies are named after Katie Medrano and are awarded to youth class racers who enter their first race in their career at the AMP OWN series. Those have become one of the most cherished trophies for the youth class division.

Sponsors for the series include Cycle 1, Atwoods Ranch and Home, Daley’s Speed Shop, FMF of So. California, Twin Air Filters, Moto Master Brake Systems, 7 UP, Ozarka Water, Frank’s Trailers, Daddy Hinkle's Steaks, Jamil’s Steak House, Marriott Lawton, Quick Break Phillips 66, Harbor Freight Tools, Light Shoes, and many more.

5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals - 3rd Annual Curley Sutton Memorial Rnd # 7 - Dec 29, 2007 Harrah Oklahoma - OK Corral Indoor Arena Sweet Competes in Three State Battle at the New Year’s Bash   130 entries competed during round seven of the 14 race 5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Short Track series along with races from three states represented. Sammy Sweet and Casey Hackfeld made the trip up from Dallas, Justin Thurman rolled in from Arkansas all to do battle with the local Oklahoma racers in the Pro motorcycle classes. Sweet recently announced he is competing in the AMA GNC Nationals this upcoming season. www.sammysweetracing.com A tacky racetrack welcomed the racers, and when the arm pump stopped it was Justin Thurman with a sweep, taking the checks in the 250 Open Pro, the Open Pro Singles and in the Pro 7-Up DFC. Sweet improved with every lap on the tight tacky indoor, and ran a best finish of second place in the Open Pro Singles contest with Brian Collins picking up a very close third. Collins and Sweet were aboard near identical Kawasaki 450s. Those two let The Good Times Roll, but not good enough to put away Thurman aboard John Calvert’s prepared Yamaha Framer. Mad Dogs, 10-Inch and 12-Inch Pit Bikes were in abundance with Corly Jones running away with the Dog title. Youngster 14-yr-old Conner Blevins out of Noble, Oklahoma took the 12–Inch honors, Blevins is a multidiscipline rider competing in CMRA Road Racing in several classes, on dirt Indoors at the AMP OWN series and running some Mini Endurance races in Texas and Oklahoma. The 10-Inch pinch came down to the final lap with Bret Sowders inching out Blevins at the finish. It was Peyton Simpson with another win only this time in the Open Amateur division as the youngster slid the big bike around defeating Jason Walker in the process. Simpson took the wins in both the 85 and the 25/250 classes. Edmond based Wesley Collins continued to wow the crowd by repeating his winning streak and taking home two first place trophies for the night. Noah Prescott picked up his first win in the PW B class, Prescott remains 2nd in points in the PW A & B divisions behind class leader Collins. Tony Opichka led Sebastin Ellingsworth to the finish line taking the final checks and the win in the PW BB defeating all challengers. Three cherished "My First Race" trophies were awarded. The trophies are named after Katie Medrano and are awarded to youth class racers who enter their first race in their career at the AMP OWN series. 5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals
Rnd # 8 - Jan 5, 2008
Harrah Oklahoma - OK Corral Indoor Arena

Sowders tastes victory in the new year Australia Represented

137 entries compete in round eight of the 14 race 5th Annual AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Short Track Indoor Points Series. Past two time Open Pro Singles Champ of the Series Bret Sowders scored his first victory of the series defeating Brian Collins and Casey Hackfeld in the process. Sowders rides out of the famous Adam’s Racing Stables home of Scotty Adams racing products. The Adam family participated in races held in the OK Corral dating back to 1972. Orbin Adams, crew chief of the year for 2006 has helped a large number of riders. Adams provides the Wet It product used on the dirt Indoors at all the AMP OWN events. Sowder’s sister Nicalee is the President of the AIR Fund, a not for profit organization that provides assistance to injured riders. She is also the scorekeeper for the AMP OWN series. www.air-fund.com - www.scottyadamsracing.com

A semi-moist racetrack evolved from higher than normal temps in the 70’s. Sowders shared the podium with Brian Collins who took the win in the 250 Pro class.

Knobbies mounted on the 10-Inch and 12-Inch Pit Bikes opened up the packed clay better than a Lely Tiller. Youngster 14-yr-old Conner Blevins out of Noble, Oklahoma took the 10–Inch honors, Chance Osburn won the Mad Dog battle that included a mix bag of bikes in an Outlaw Mad Dog Shoot Out. Osburn continued to win the cash purse in the 12-Inch on the final lap with Osburn and Blevins in a photo finish at the checkers. Prescotts a pair rounded out the Young Guns Xtreme Lights battle with Bryce defeating Noah Prescott for the win.

The 50/50 Ticket Winner came all the way from Australia to witness the indoor at the OK Corral.

It was Tommy Goodman putting a stop to Fred Mears winning streak in the Vintage class. . Jason Walker showed the Open A class the quick way round the Indoor with Peyton Simpson settling for second. Simpson took the wins in both the 85 and the 125/250 classes.

Edmond based Wesley Collins was seen straddling the back gate giving all the riders a high five during the heat races. Collins came aboard in his usual fun filled state of mind and continued to wow the crowd by repeating his winning streak and taking home three first place trophies for the night.

Tony Opichka led Sebastin Ellingsworth to the finish line taking the final checks and the win in the PW BB. Four cherished “My First Race” trophies were awarded. The trophies are named after Katie Medrano and are awarded to youth class racers who enter their first race in their career at the AMP OWN series.

Sponsors for the series include Cycle 1, Vanson Leathers, Atwoods Ranch and Home, Daley’s Speed Shop, FMF of So. Put the shine on your racer and spiff up your gear.

Ride Oklahoma Magazine will be in the house Saturday night for round #9 of the AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals Indoor Series races. Their crew will come equipped with Magazine quality cameras shooting photos, and writers for an article to be featured in the Ride Oklahoma magazine about the races.
