When you're able to do something that Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell or Doug Wolfgang hasn't done, you've done something extremely special. Congrats to Donny on yet another historic achievement. The dude is amazing.
|
The only back to back winner of the Kings Royal is a great accomplishment, for sure. And having his name mentioned with the "Big 3" is deserving (or vice versa...there's with his). Too many have either forgotten, or aren't aware of what Steve, Sammy and Doug did accomplish, and how important they were to sprint car racing in their primes. Donny knows and he acknowledges it. It's just too bad that Wolfie was unable to get in those extra 20 or so years that Steve and Sammy did.
Great post fiXXXer!

Unfortunately the Royal brings out some of the worst. I try to spend as much time in the pits as I can when I go to Eldora.
|
The worst In all of sprint car racing. That with no one on the fence makes it like work.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Where I was seated we didn't have anyone really drinking too much or anything, had good fans nearby and thankful for that. Going to see Outlaws and eldora for first time last night was really something else. It was so cool to see the top drivers finally race. And seeing as nobody mentioned it, how about Cole Duncan, Lee Jacobs, and Chad Kemenah's runs as well? 4th, 6th, and 7th place finishes respectively. Cole and Lee just have ran local shows this year and Cole picked up an all star win at Atomic. These two have been having fantastic seasons this year and am ecstatic to see them put on a good showing on a big stage. Lee Jacobs made the feature at the Doty and all 3 nights at the royal which is extremely impressive for a local team. Maybe they'll use that purse money to gear up and run all stars again next year!

The only downside to last night was the F.Q.I. (Fan Quality Index) dropped dramatically from Friday night. Entirely too many 40 year old adolescents, power drinkers, felons, and trustees of modern chemistry. Then there were the idiots standing at the start of the feature which I will never understand.
However I did enjoy the racingand the track was right as rain.

Wait a minute.....we talkin' about Eldora or The Double Douche bar? Lol

Seems to be running better in that car than he has in the 59/94 this season but I think he wants to be out with the all-stars instead of running locally. Was actually surprised the 07 team went out to Eldora. I also don't think Coldren is going to get rid of Doug Esh. He's been pretty decent in the car too. Smith and the Coldren team definitely seem to have gelled quickly though.
|
Ryan said Rob Warko and the Leidigs "helped" with the trip to Kings Royal so likely Coldren would not have made trip on own. Why Ryan didn't go in his Warko/Leidig ride I don't know. Maybe he needed a bit from the three parties and it made the most sense to do it in Coldrens equipment.

Would Bell have caught Schatz if he had 10 more laps?
|
Doesn't matter. It was billed as a 40 lapper and that's what they raced.

Sounds like you enjoyed your first WoO race. Awesome!
Make that drive from NW Ohio to Lernerville tomorrow for the Silver Cup. $25k to win. Lernerville regularly produces some good racing, especially during Silver Cup. High banked 4/10s (or 3/8s depending on who you ask) track that slicks off to a curb by the A.
Anyway, glad to hear you enjoyed your first WoO race (and trip to the Big E). And you're right Lee is having a hell of a week. Kudos to him and crew. Cole Duncan is a very, very underrated driver and an extremely nice and down to earth kid (his whole family is great).

Just watched the highlights, looked like Sweet and Duncan had a good/entertaining battle for most of the race and that Bell was the show. Pounded the fence and was hammer down the entire time. Wow! Track looked fast in multiple lines as well. It's always amazing how much speed you can carry through the turns (seems like especially 1 and 2) at the Big E.

Lernerville is one of the tracks I'd like to visit sometime once I'm out of school for sure. Place has a lot of history.

No doubt Schatz is the best now & one of the all time greats, & anyone who doesn't recognize that is goofy.
But I think original post means that not everyone has to be happy about it.....
My opinion is "hats off to Donny", nothing but respect for the guy.... but I still root for somebody else to win

Terry Funk should have won an Oscar for the delivery of that line.
