SPENCER FASTEST AT THE FAIR Monday, 08 October 2007
Perris, Calif....The Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car series made an appearance Sunday night at the Perris Auto Speedway as part of the 2007 Southern California Fair with Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif., taking the 30-lap main event win.
"It's a good win for us. We led a lot laps last night at Ventura and dropped back there at the end and finished third, so it's nice to be able to make up for last night," said Spencer after taking his fifth USAC/CRA feature win of the season.
2005 USAC/CRA Champion Damion Gardner started on the pole and led the opening lap before being overtaken during the following circuit by the Ron Chaffin / Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply No. 50 Maxim driven Spencer, who started fifth. Five laps later, Gardner tangled with David Cardey and flipped in turn-one. Gardner was not injured, but Cardey was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for a laceration on his left arm.
Two laps after the restart, Danny Sheridan, Santa Maria, Calif. put his Kittle Plumbing-PJ1 No. 18 Stinger under Spencer and secured the lead exiting turn-two. Moving up to the cushion, Spencer withstood a couple of challenges from fast qualifier Cory Kruseman, Ventura, Calif., and was able to move back ahead of Sheridan on the eleventh-lap.
"The track was getting pretty slick and the bottom had little moister, so I just made sure I hit my marks down there and ran as low as I could go. It worked out pretty good for us the first couple of laps and we were able to get the lead," Spencer recalled. "During the red flag we decided that we'd run the bottom until it slowed up and then switch to the top where we could carry a little more momentum...it just worked out good for us tonight."
Once in the top spot, Spencer immediately open-up a comfortable advantage. Spencer enjoyed that advantage until series-point leader Tony Jones and Garrett Hansen tangled and brought out the yellow-flag six laps from the finish.
Krusmeman put his Sander Engineering No. 21k Bullet into the runner-up spot shortly after the restart and smoothly began closing on Spencer. Moments after accepting the white flag, Kruseman was only a few inches behind Spencer when he dove down to the bottom of turn-one hoping to pull-off a dramatic slide-job. Knowing that he wasn't going to beat Spencer to the cushion, Kruseman could only watch helplessly as Spencer darted back around him on the preferred line.
"Cory raced me real clean. He could have let the car carry to the top and we probably would have both crashed. I have a lot of respect for him. He's and awesome racer and it's pretty cool anytime you can beat him," Spencer later said.
Rickie Gaunt, Torrance, Calif., drove his Nadine Gardner / Black Widow Racing No. 94 Chalk to a third-place finish ahead of Sheridan. After starting 16th, Rip Williams, Yorba Linda, Calif., piloted Sharon Jory's AMA Plastics No. 3 Stinger to a fifth-place finish. Making only his second start in Jack Gardner's No. 96 car, Tyler Brown earned "Hard-Charger" honors with his 19th to sixth-place drive.
