Read on another forum, Dave Steele passed away from injuries suffered at Desoto Speedway. This sport is easy to hate sometimes.
Thoughts and prayers to the Steele Family.

God speed.
Such a racer and fabricator. Built his own cars. Great career.
Got into someone on initial start and spun around and hit wall on left side,
and they build the asphalt cars way to the left.
Very sad but went out doing what he loved.
Rest in peace Man of Steel.

I was there last night, it was a violet impact. The car was spinning as it hit the wall and then it just stopped. It was one of these deals where there were miltiple directions involved, all at the speed that a pavement car can go on a hi-banked track even on the start.
Over the years I saw Dave win many, many races. He was absolutly THE best open wheel pavement driver I ever saw, right up there with Ollie Silva and anyone else one can mention in the same breath. And a very nice guy as well.
To say he will be missed around here is beyond an understatement.
RIP Dave

I believe he took his IRL rookie test in a Panther car at Texas in about 1998 or so. Was hoping he would be the guy to get the dirt and short track community a win at the Indy 500 but he never got that full time opportunity in a good car. Big time bummer.....

I just rewatched the espn broadcast of the twin 25s midget race at IRP that he won 50,000$ bonus In 2002. Its on YouTube. Definitely worth a watch. They inverted the field after the 1st 25 lapper and I'm assuming they didn't think that anyone would be able to actually do it for the 50k bonus. Dave won the 1st one and started at the back in the second race. He was in 3rd by like the 5th or 6th lap. He absolutely put on a clinic on the outside to come through the field. Once he got by Darland for the lead he just made everyone look bad and won the 2nd race from the back and the bonus by like 1/2 a track. God damn he was an amazing talent.

I remember watching him back in the ESPN2 Thursday Night Thunder days. He's was incredibly talented. I kinda lost track of him over the years because I don't follow the pavement stuff but it sounds like he was still kicking ass. RIP Dave and condolences to his entire family.

Honestly one of my all time heroes in racing. What I loved about him is the fact that he wasn't interested in the bullshit of bigtime racing. He had both an indycar ride and a stock car ride (arca and a couple busch starts) for a very short period of time but ultimately he was like screw this I want to race usac and stuff where there's no ass kissing and BS. So many of the amazing open wheel talents end up selling their souls for a shot at that money but to me it didn't seem like Dave Steele was interested in that. He just wanted to race.

What blows my mind is that he survived all those insane places that usac used to race like Richmond and stuff where the sprint cars averaged around 135 before the containment seat and hans days and then of all places he ends up getting killed on a 3/8 mile track. It's mind blowing that more guys didn't get hurt on thise huge tracks, especially in midgets.

If he had a containment seat we would probably not be having this conversation. Come one guys, no one should be racing with out a full containment seat on both sides. Tired of losing guys in situations that could be prevented. RIP Dave.
