A lost art hehe. I happen to run into a guy I knew from years ago at walmart one day. I was speechless and couldn't stop staring at his mullet....and his kids mullets. My husband and I walked off and busted out laughing since all that kept going through our heads was Joe Dirt.

Neat idea with the picts. Don't know any of them, but some of the names are familiar!

Those bring back some good memories.  I wonder if that 56 car in the back ground of the vince guerra pic is Steve Sanders.  Cheese, I never thought I would get a belly, but here I am 28 and a beer drinker and the damn thing won't go away by itself like it used to.

Haha. It's okay old guys, I'm already started on my long term investment. I'm not a big drinker though, so it's primarily McDonalds, Taco Bell, Taco Mayo, Taco Cabana, and pretty much anything else with the word "taco" in it.

It is also good to see Mr. Pickard come out of the woodwork on this board. Welcome to the information super highway!

These look like the program pictures from Charles Riney's organization (only lasted one season), I think it was the MCRS, or something like that. His car is the 8r in the background of Len Larkin. I do think that is Steve Sanders car. Charles owned Myriad Systems, and started and owned MotorX, first on 22nd and Macarthur, then on Reno, south of the fairgrounds. Jack Moulton was his partner, and he eventually turned it over to his son, and it finally closed up. The series was a traveling series, and paid well, was well organized, and really liked by racers and drivers alike. I think other promoters ganged up on him , and put him out of business by not sanctioning races at their tracks. He had some partners lined up and proposed to the city to build a track, but they vetoed him, so he quit trying.

Cheese, if you would make friends with an Iraqi or Iranian student, you could get test results before you have to take the test, which will save you book money, and you can spend it on your race car. It was that way in the 70's at CSC, and I assume its the same now.

the series TMac is talking about was called the Modified Sprint Car Series and ran the 1988 season. I think there were about 20 shows, places like Enid, Caney, Muskogee, Ardmore, etc...I think we ran Dodge City and Hutchinson too. My dad is Len Larkin and he helped Charles run the shows. There were great car counts at most of the events, and a nice point fund for the top15 or 20 at the end of the year. It only lasted one year due to a deal put together by Stan Durrett from Tulsa. It was called MAPS (Mid America Promoters Series). I'm fuzzy on the details of how MAPS worked now, but it basically forced the drivers to commit to MAPS to keep themselves involved in their weekly home track points. I think some shows were both regular point races and MAPS races or something.

I'm almost 38, and been around this all my life. Maybe it was just my age at the time (18), or something, but I had more fun that summer than I can ever remember racing.

They didn't run Ardmore or Woodford(Arbuckle speedway), but they did run Ada. I believe Ada was Wayne Johnsons winged debut. This was the first time I became aquainted with what used to be the Suchy 76 car. That was the last night it ran with the old square body. It was blue and red. McClelland got stuck in the infield, The three Johnson brothers came in with purple cars nearly identical. Abernathy chose a gear to run low while everyone else wanted to run high. I don't remember what Aaron Lemmons did, He may have won.

Riney did a cool thing on the Dodge city, Hutch trip. He got back into racing around '86 and I think he told his wife he would quit after he won a feature. Up to this point he always had good equipment but it just never happened. He was promoting the Dodge City deal and the next day was Hutch(NCRA).The troubles had been going pretty good by this time and he suggested a boycott for Hutch. Nobody wanted to miss Hutch, so he followed them up there. HE ENDED UP WINNING THE THING! Yes, his first feature win was the Hutchinson Nationals in 1988.

I remember that Siloam Springs was one of the stops. A friend of mine and myself stopped into town before the races and a hillbilly guy made the comment, "Do you think that guy Sammy Swindall (his pronounciation) and Steve Kinser will be there?" We told him yeah to come on out and just shook our heads as we left.

Good times.
