State Will Not Work With Selinsgrove Speedway, Refuses To Allow Racing
May 16 Event Cancelled Per Governor’s Office, Oval Planning For Mid-Season Action
|
A late morning call Tuesday to State Representative David Rowe from the Pennsylvania Governor’s office has ended any hopes of racing in the near future at Selinsgrove Speedway and therefore the “Posse Unleashed” 410 sprint car, non-spectator, non-social special slated for this Saturday, May 16 has been cancelled.
Despite the best efforts of Representative Rowe and others in the legislature, no reasonable response could be achieved from the governor’s office that would permit racing at the speedway under the already installed state and CDC “aggressive mitigation” guidelines that the oval was fully instituting as a preventative measure against COVID-19.
“We are extremely disappointed at the heavy-handed approach and response by the governor’s office to our good business practices in an effort to race at the track,” says oval co-promoter Mike Heffner.
“Not only did the state lead us on a wild goose chase by approving our plans and then reversing course mid-stream which caused us significant financial loss, but then when faced with a reasonable and flexible request to see the event completed, the governor’s office simply refused to show any interest or workability in remedying the issue.”
“We are very dissatisfied with not only this decision but with how the entire situation was handled. It is a glaring example of failure in leadership by the state during this trying time,” Heffner summarized.
The cancellation of the event means that ALL entry fees previously collected for the event will be fully refunded by the speedway in the coming days.
Questions can be directed to [email protected].
Slated to be live streamed via pay per view on The Cushion, all pre-purchase event view tickets will be refunded by the broadcaster.
“We have no choice but to honor state directives in order to protect not only Selinsgrove Speedway and its future but to also protect DH & L Fire Company, the majority stakeholder in the facility,” says track General Manager Steve Inch.
“Both the speedway and the fire company are reliant in one way or another upon state awarded contracts, licenses and funding in order to keep operating and to lose that support would be devastating to both places in so many ways.”
Selinsgrove Speedway remains optimistic that it can and will see a return to racing action during mid-season and indeed plans are in place to see the historic oval resume action as soon as possible.
The speedway is currently evaluating a plan for hosting conservative practice sessions during the coming weeks and will make announcements about that plan in the near future.

It certainly seems like Selinsgrove got the short end of the stick on the first run, and quite possibly did for the second run, however, at any point did they have explicit permission from the state governor's office for the SECOND attempt at this race? I am not saying they didn't - just asking.
|
This is my understanding and if anyone has any more info, please feel free to chime in and/or correct me. Selinsgrove attempted to race last week, the 9th, just after moving into the yellow phase. After being given the green light by the DCED earlier in the week, Selinsgrove was told later in the week things had changed and they could no longer race. Instead of cancelling completely, they postponed until this week, the 16th. I believe it was their hope that after communicating with the governor, the governor would see that this race poses less of a threat to the participants than those same people going to Walmart. There would have been less people at the track, it would be outdoors and the track had plans in place to follow the CDC guidelines. The track is owned by a local fire company and it is a revenue generator for them and for the race teams in attendance, this is a business. The teams spend money, make money and pay taxes. For those that view this simply as entertainment, the fans, fans wouldn't be there thus elminating that factor. Apparently there wasn't much discussion with the governor as the race was definitely been cancelled as of last night. As has been the case throughout the entire process here in PA, there is no rhyme or reason to the decisions being made with common sense and consistency thrown out the window.
As far as Roaring Knob, they are in a county that when they raced, was still in red. Reportedly they just raced and flew low enough under the radar authorities didn't know they were racing until the race was happening. Apparently the authorities don't follow social media because it was there for anyone who wanted to see it. They didn't try and hide it. State police were said to have been called and while police didn't require them to cease operations immediately, the track was instructed to move things along and get it finished. I heard comments that it was packed but looking at the photos posted on their Facebook page, it doesn't appear that social distancing should have been a problem. Roaring Knob will be going yellow Friday the 15th and as of now, they claim they are still racing. What absolutely infuriates me about their race last week has nothing to do with people gathering and the virus. I'm hearing they had no safely personnel on site. If someone knows for certain otherwise, please let me know. If what I've heard is true, no matter what your opinion about racing during these times, not having safely personnel is beyond careless and reckless. As a driver there is no way I would participate in such an event and I would not support it as a fan. We all want to get back to the track but this isn't worth it. Going back has to be done the right way. It's actions like this that make the dirt track community look like a bunch of factious ignorant hillbillies.

It definitely seems the first run was mishandled by the state - that seems clear. However, unless there's some info that has not been reported about this week's attempt, it seems that the track may have erred in pushing forward.

I'm not quite sure I'm following you. I don't think Selinsgrove has erred in any way. When the race was initially cancelled, they were transparent what transpired to that point. They were initially given approval and that approval was later rescinded. It was clear when they postponed that they were doing so in an effort to try and work with officials to reach a resolution that would allow the race to be held. They never tried to hide anything from anyone, officials, race teams or fans. It was all out there for everyone to see. They never stated or implied that by postponing, the race was definitely going to happen the next weekend and all had been resolved. Everyone knew there was a chance the race would be cancelled. If anyone thought postponing meant a race the following weekend was for certain, it was only because they weren't keeping up with the information Selinsgrove was putting out. They did right by everybody as far as I'm concerned. They got approval up front and when it was rescinded, they fought to try and get to race all while letting everyone know exactly what was going on. They couldn't do any more. Bigger picture, this establishes that even in yellow, race tracks in PA can't race.

my son was offered a 600 micro ride for Saturday at Greenwood Valley.
He lives in Jersey so he called them Friday to be sure and he specifically asked about the lockdown and their reply was "we are racing"
while driving up there Saturday morning they called him and said it would be practice only no fans
when he got there the word was other tracks got wind of them racing and ratted them out and the government enforcers threatened them with loss of their business license

First of all Trump could never be a dictator. He is way too lazy and not smart enough. Something we are lucky for. If he put a National plan in place maybe we would be racing by now but its too late at this point and this will just continue to drag on. In time of severe crisis he divided the states(country) not lived up to the title which is President of the United States. Love it when these people call others cowards when they are really the snowflake because they can't go to a race or get food at Red Lobster on time - find video on twitter - happened right in sprint car country - York, PA.

Roaring knob is a joke. They had 20 cars in 5 divisions. They have zero fire protection, no ambulance, why anyone goes to the place is beyond belief. Wonce this virus is behind us and other tracks open in western pa

Not saying the rest of what you posted is right or wrong, but just by a quick look at their race results I see 67 cars, not 20

According to their Facebook results, they did have about 60+ cars. Who cares. The bigger issue is their lack of safety equipment. I made reference to this in a post I made on the prior page. I heard rumor of it but didn't get it from what I consider to be a reliable source so I wasn't sure if it was true. I hoped it wasn't. It appears it is. No matter how you feel about racing or not racing during this time, there is absolutely no way I would support a race at this track either as a driver or a fan if they have no safety personnel. As a driver I would never put myself in that situation and I shouldn't have to inquire if there is medical personnel on site. It should be a given and no race should even be considered to be run without it. As a fan, I don't want to witness a driver having just crashed not receiving the benefit of quick medical treatment. My mind doesn't even want to go to thinking what could happen in the case of a fire. That said, I wouldn't be the one to push for state to intervene and shut them down. Not my place to do so but I would hope all would have enough sense to do that on their own.

Sorry, but Strawser is right, Wolf is a POS. Pa residents are finding that out. I don't like agreeing with Strawser but on this, I will. And stop already with the anti-Trump garbage. If you want to be a butthurt Liberal do it somewhere else for God's sake.

Typical Trump sycophant who defends then calls someone a name and feels compelled to use the lord's name. You defend someone who cares way less for you than your own governor. I know it hurts but deep down you know its true if you just took a minute to think about it. I would bet you have never been to Mara-a-Lago or could even afford to join (neither could I for the record) unless you want to work there. But you most likely could not even work there because Trump has lots of immigrant workers working there and most likely many undocumented. But of course you love Trump because he brags about building a wall Mexico will never pay for. He did say Mexico would pay. By the way when Trump says China is paying billions in Tariffs that is not true. The American Consumer is. I can guarantee you that. In my occupation I have had to raise prices multiple times over the past two years to my customers as direct result of Tariffs. I get it, just don't lie about it.
You are probably pro life too but you are OK with just opening everything up so others might die. I would guess you would be really upset or possibly react violently if your daughter's or son's school principal was caught on tape saying "Girls let you grab them by the p*$$^" but its lockerroom talk when the POTUS says it? 84,000 people have died and growing! Please don't say they are false reporting Covid-19 deaths. Please know deaths are way up over the same time as last year. I was hoping it was going to "dissappear" or hoping to be "in church by Easter", or go from "15 cases to 0" like our POTUS told us instead of putting a plan in place and leading the United States. He had small window to take the lead and unite and surprise many people. Just couldn't do it. True colors always come out.
I would hope you laughed or even perhaps got mad when Jared Kushner got up and spoke to the Nation! WTF was that? Maybe we can agree on something. That was so weak. You know that is his son in law? Whatever happened to General Mattis and General Kelly?
I know you love the good ole USA. Did you get upset when the football players kneeled during the national athem? How pissed where you when your POTUS, who dodged the draft said "I like people who weren't caught" about John McCain, a war hero and captive for 5 1/2 years! Just a joke right? Come on, you are smarter than this? Its not about being liberal or republican just listen to his own words and see where we are today. USA needs a leader, Not this.
