Non-wing is my preference by far.   The racing is generally much better non wing.   I recently took a friend of mine to Devils Bowl for a winged show, and it was his first time at any kind of race track.    He noted very quickly during the heat races that the cars tended to string out after the first turn and then run the rest of the race as a high speed freight train.  His exact comment was "I notice they're not really jockeying for position very much".    I've never seen a non wing show that didn't have good racing, but winged shows can be hit and miss depending on track conditions.

The good news is that Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore is having a show with both in October.   I'm hoping to be out there for that one.

Winged because it is all we got. From what few races I have seen  I think I favor Non Wing a little  more though.

Depends what track for either one. Nobody knows how to set up.or drive a non wing anymore so l guess I'm stuck with wing.

Non-wing It uses the talent the drivers has to find grip. With a wing it is more aero and can you keep the tires on the ground at high speed. AKA shocks.

My question where do they run Non-wing Sprints? Beside Oregon and Washington, California, USAC National Tour, Arizona.

On a regular bases. Not one race a year.

Both?

but if I had to choose one it would be traditional sprints. The racing is usually much better than their winged counterparts.

  • I'd say the State of Indiana would be the best place to start looking for non wing racing.

wingless racing seems to have less follow the leader racing than winged racing. from what I have seen,

i prefer traditional sprints over winged enough to make the 9hr drive from wing country (pa) to indiana as often as possible however a great wing race(rare) tops a great non wing race... you just have a much better chance of seeing great non wing racing

Waynesfield is the only track in Ohio to run Non-Wing Sprints weekly & we actually have a series called BOSS that runs Non-Wing based out of Ohio & they run Ohio, Pa., Ind., WVA. that I know of.

I relly have no preference, big, little small I like them all.

We have a non-wing series with a limited motor that started up a few years ago and they're my favorite class to watch locally.  I grew up watching non-wing Sprints in the 60's before they sprouted wings so it has always been my preference but didn't get to see them in the upper Midwest for many years.

wings, all about the corner speed.

And yet it's that corner speed and the high horsepower that turns it into a freight train.   Faster on the stopwatch doesn't necessarily translate into a good race.

I love both!  I have seen great racing with and without wings and have seen some duds both ways also.

I grew up non wing watching Gaines, Wilkerson, Krebs, Millburn, Bob Kinser etc.Loved it then.

Come the 80s several IN tracks went wing and I knew all the heavy hitters.
Come the early 90s the car counts went to 8-9 at  some shows and all the tracks went back to NW  We then had 35-40 car averages through the 90s-2000s  Still got about 25 averages even though more tracks are running NW.

I can honestly say I flat out love Non Wing racing.  Hell there's passing in every heat.  Seen several wins from the tail and deep like 14th to win etc.

Winged the heat races suck most of the time and without either long greens or a lot of yellows.  There isn't any passing.

Some tracks are the exception.  But I don't find it the rule.

I've seen a lot more wins by determination and balls in NW than Winged with top equiptment.

Like them both but prefer non-winged because driver skills are a higher percentage of the outcome than the mechanic's skills or car owners pocketbook.   That usually results in a more entertaining evening.

if you've never watched them run, come to the louie vermiele classic at calistoga next weekend  on the famed 1/2 mile and make the decision then...

Ascot was the greatest of all time..

West Capital wasn't half bad either..

Life is good...
