Ever since April, when local entrepreneur Chuck Brennan announced the purchase of Huset's Speedway at Brandon as the latest addition to his entertainment empire, rumors have been swirling about his plans.

At a press conference this afternoon, Brennan dispelled those stories by answering questions from drivers, fans, track employees, sponsors and owners of area racetracks and making an announcement or two of his own.

First among them: Badlands Motor Speedway will expand to Saturday night races, using its traditional Sunday night slot as a time for lower-tier racing and a back-up for rained-out events. Brennan described it as a revolutionary change.

"One of the biggest complaints I've heard is people drive all the way to Sioux Falls, have a rainout and go back to where they came from," Brennan said. "Now, if it rains out Saturday night, it will move to Sunday night, and tickets will still be good. We'll have a back-up night every night of the season."

Saturday night races will involve 410 sprint cars, 360 sprints and street stocks, with 305s, micro-sprint cars, B modifieds and hobby stocks on Sundays.

More updates: Parking, pricing, purses

Other changes planned for the 62-year-old track, which is operating under its old management for this final year, include a massive update to its infrastructure, expanded parking, a new pricing system and increased purses for drivers.

"The facility's going to be unbelievable, incredible," said Tom Savage, who started Monday as the track's assistant general manager for marketing, branding and sales.

Brennan scheduled the press conference for Thursday because Huset's hosts one of its biggest annual events this Sunday, the World of Outlaws sprint car tour.

"I want to dispel what I would say has been an onslaught of rumors of things that are happening at Huset's Speedway that no one could possibly know about because I haven't told anyone," Brennan said. "It spawns from excitement."

——————————

Brennan is the founder of the Badlands Pawn, an entertainment complex that is scheduled to open at Thanksgiving. In 1998 the Sioux Falls native established the signature loan firm Dollar Loan Center and is a former rock concert promoter.

He plans to spend $5 million over the next three to four years at the racetrack, Brennan said, and those plans dispel one rumor he has heard, that he purchased the track only to already sell it for use as a housing development.

Instead, he will close next week on a 26-acre parcel of farmland next to the track. Half of that will be used for a new parking area, Brennan said.

The track's old infrastructure will be torn out over the next two years with modern restrooms, stadium lighting, parking lot lighting, a new sound system and two giant electronic billboard signs.

Live and robotic cameras at races

"For the first time ever we're going to be filming," Brennan said, "with four live and four robotic cameras. That's never been done in 60 years. It will be mixed professionally and put up on a giant board."

Fans will begin to see changes this summer, Brennan said. Plans include filling the infield with concrete and drainage so it no longer floods.

Tickets to Huset's currently sell for $15 per race with $30 admission for the World of Outlaws, Savage said. Current plans are to establish a price range that will run from $10 to $100. With that comes an end to the one-size-fits-all seating now at the racetrack.

"There will be reserve seating," Brennan said. "For the first time ever fans will be able to buy a ticket and sit in the same seat all season, like a football game. They can own it for 30 years. There will be luxury boxes and new suites and better seating for the fans."

Sunday night races will be half-price seating. With the lower classes of sprint cars racing on Sundays, it will become a family night, Brennan said, and give those drivers a chance to race more often.

Four-day festival and $200,000 purse

Drivers themselves will see a benefit, too. Huset's now pays out an average of $20,000 a week, and Brennan expects purses to go up as attendance increases. He predicts purses to increase 50 to 100 percent.

Along with that comes a four-day festival with a $200,000 purse. Brennan calls that amount unprecedented in the racing industry for an event of that length. It will begin with a Thursday night concert, followed by three days of racing with $50,000 prize money for the top finisher.

Concerts will take place at the racetrack as often as six times a summer, said Brennan, who promises to bring in performers of Sanford Premier Event Center quality. Four concerts already have been scheduled for the summer of 2016.

Non-winged sprint cars also will participate on the festival weekend, named the Badlands Motor Speedway $200,000 Rock & Roll Gold Cup. In addition, events such as monster trucks, tractor pulls and demolition derbies will return to the track.

"There's a lot going on," Savage said. "I've been to every short track in the country, and this will be without question the premier sprint car track in the country."

Yeah... Unless they're hoping to draw a bunch of cars that run Grand Forks this is going to kill the 410 division. Doesn't seem like a very good strategy.

I understand why he wants to run Saturdays, but he won't get the premier drivers out there not even if he doubles the purse.

Husets has always been Sunday nights and I'm sure its a challenge to get fans and drivers to attend with work on Monday morning. I think Friday night would be more realistic.

Yikes, this is a very odd move. How many more fans are going to come out on a Saturday night vs. Sunday, maybe a few because they don't have to go to work the next morning. But as stated previously, it's always been Sunday. Fans are used to it. What about Knoxville, what about I-90, what about Jackson 360's? Now the teams are forced to make a choice that they didn't have to make previously. So are the fans. Alot of fans from the Sioux Falls area go to Knoxville every Saturday. Now what? What about T-Mac, Dobmeier, Henderson, Kaeding, Lasoski??? This is a head scratcher.

I have been sceptical from the beginning about Brennan's commitment to sprint car racing at Huset's. After reading he is planning to run 410's on Saturday nights I am convinced that he is more dedicated to promoting rock festivals then sprint car racing. He may pull some North Dakota cars but he won't have any regulars from Knoxville. When you hear of  sprint car tracks being sold you hope sprint car racing there will at least be as good as it has been, if not better. In this case I seriously doubt it will be either.  Saying Bad Lands Speedway will be the premier sprint car track in the country is a stretch if I ever heard one.

This is all about making money, period.

Sounds like he could care less what anybody else does.  Still don't know if he's actually running the racing programs, or if someone else is.

To Tom Savage: I suggest you do a poll of Husets fans regarding moving 410 sprints to Saturday night. You may not be happy with the results. I really hope sprint car fans flood this site with their reactions to this recent announcement.

Saturdays will never work. Wouldnt be suprised if it changed by next year already and if not then the sprintcar divisions will get dropped rather quickly. I for one would never bypass a Saturday night at Knoxville to watch fewer cars 5 hours away. Also, the reserved seats 10 dollars to 100 dollars.... ehh just not what dirt track fans are used to so probably wont go over well. If you got ur seats in the stands and have to sit in them get there early. If they get taken no big deal just move a little bit over from normal. Freedom of movement is nice when its not a big shown (Which HUSETS I mean Badlands wont and doesnt have many of).

I was hoping that wasn't true but it looks like it is. Is this the beginning of the end?

He says of a 4 day event he has planned is "unprecidented in the racing industry for an event of that length". Guess he has never heard of the Knoxville Nationals!!! Maybe thats why he thinks he can run 410 sprints on Saturday, cause he knows nothing about sprint car racing at all.

Plus day 1 is only a concert. And if I read it correctly then each night is 50g to the winner. That leaves 50g for the rest of the purse over 3 days if I am reading it right. Amazing..... Amazingly top heavy. Hope they get this straightened out before next season.

I took some heat earlier when I wasn't ready to declare the NSL a success until they got some races under them.  This area was declared a racing paradise sight unseen and the NSL has delivered so far so they have done their part.  Nevertheless, and I have seen this with Late Models and Modfieds, WISSOTA vs NASCAR vs USRA vs IMCA and just about every other monkey wrench one could imagine over the years.  When promoters start seeing 40+ 410's showing up and drivers putting it to the WoO a couple times before the end of June eyes light up with dollar signs.  This is the kind of monkey wrench I was concerned could potentially derail positive changes.  Not only will it affect 410 racing but this latest development cuts into 360 racing down in that area as well.  I'm not saying told ya' so or anything like that, just that I have seen this kind of thing happen many times over in various ways.

The latest mess up here is due to a long time Friday night WISSOTA track switched to IMCA.  The Sunday WISSOTA track a half hour up the road switched to Friday night so they could go head to head.  Some say it was out of spite and WISSOTA loyalty is a huge deal up in this area and drives otherwise sane men to do strange things.  As it turns out both Friday night tracks are drawing about 60 cars and half the fans.  Makes sense because in years past the same cars and fans went to both, one on Friday and the other on Sunday.  That is still going on as I type and will likely only be resolved when one or the other backs down or ceases to exist.  Both have a lot of history and host an occasional Sprint special so the Stock Car and Modified infighting indirectly affects Sprint Car fans in our area.  By the way, the track that switched to IMCA is Princeton Speedway (anyone remember the Princeton National) and the one that switched to Friday is Granite City (hosting WoO soon).  Anyone familiar with the Stock Cars and Modifieds and sanction wars up here knows this won't end well.

If he is going to keep the 305's he will have to ask forspecial Permission at least 10 Days in advance from IMCA everytime he runs Sunday after being rained out on Saturday. At least thats how it works for other IMCA Tracks.

After reading more of the press release today I'm convinced this guy has an oversized ego.  I suppose if he throws enough money at the racers he may get want he wants.
