Hate to quote Allen Iverson...but, Man, It's Practice...not a race..but PRACTICE. For about the same price as a good sprint car show, you can see Dale, Jr. PRACTICE. (or TEST, if that makes you feel better). I'll bet all the TV stations in DSM will be all over this one, too.
From today's Des Moines Register...
NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. will practice at Iowa Speedway Aug. 21-22, officials for the Newton track announced today.
Earnhardt will be joined by Martin Truex Jr., Mark Martin, Paul Menard and Jeff Earnhardt, officials said, as drivers conduct two days of tests for the Nextel Cup and Busch Series races.
Iowa Speedway officials said they will open the tests to the public, but will charge admission.
Tickets will go on sale Monday, with prices of $20 for a single-day ticket and $30 for both days. Children 12 and under accompanied by a ticket-paying adult will be admitted for free.
Earnhardt, the son of late racing great Dale Earnhardt, Sr., is considered one of the most popular NASCAR drivers in the series.
Martin raced on Iowa Speedway's 1.3-mile road course July 13 in a Daytona Prototype car as part of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

Say what you want, this is marketing at its best. Bottom line, people are going to buy tickets. If the Iowa Speedway didn't open up practice to the public they'd be ridiculed. So why not make some money when stupid people will give it away. Watch and see how many people show up. Could out sale the Indy Car race.

Nothing but the fat cat greed that is that place.....IF they were such a great deal they would throw it open as a freebe to the fans..... Let face it the racing is marginal there. at best nothing to brag about, I've talked to many people that have said they won't be back or repurchase their season tickets next year...I guess it is what it is but will probably never have anything more than Indy demo derby, and trucks....

Probably will out-sell a normal Saturday night crowd at Knoxville, unfortunately.
Dubya...I gave up on KXNO way back earlier this year when it comes to anything at all about local racing. That Jon Miller and Larry Kotler have to be the two worst sports talk hosts I've ever heard. They are both nothing but B.S. I know this from experience with them and Des Moines radio stations.
We need more talk about the Hawks/Clones in the Summer and women's professional football! Oh, and make sure they mention Jon Miller's Hawkeye website at least thirty times a show.
I'll bet all the TV stations mention Dale's coming to Iowa Speedway sometime in the first ten minutes of the 6 and 10 o'clock news this evening, too.
Yep..5:06 PM with Keith Murphy on Channel 13 gushing all over himself with "the biggest name yet to come to Iowa Speedway' and "by far, the most popular driver in NASCAR" I swear he was about to have the big "O" right there on camera...lol Oh, no mention of real racing going on next week.

Here's a very insightful interview that will describe the behind the scenes work with a NASCAR team.

Maybe KXNO or the TV guys can run this on the news or talk shows.

Oh, by the way...
Thanks Rob for the mention of The Full Throttle Racing Show and DIRTVision. It's very appreciated. Rob Gray "gets it" and I thank him for his coverage of local racing in the Register.

Your so right about that... IF Rob wasn't at the R&T they would have nothing about racing and all there is to know about tiddly-winks.... He gets it and sees alot of what is going on for what it really is..

I will give Keith Murphy and channel 13 some credit though. I about fell on the floor Sunday night watching the sports on 13, they actually showed highlights of the Dobmeier and Roberts win from Knoxville. It was not much, but what they showed was better than what they've had on there in the past!
but you guys are right, this will be covered every day on the news until the day arrives....
the biggest week and a half of the year starting tomorrow, and no mention of it so far..... rediculous!

Yes, I was pleased to see Keith give some air time to Knoxville. I had to laugh however when he mentioned that Clint GARDNER finished 2nd to Roberts.

No point in complaining about it.....They see an opportunity to make a few bucks and are capitalizing on it. Every single one of us would pick up a $20 bill if it were as easy as bending over. (which is an interesting comparison to what the NASCAR fans are doing isn't it?)
Maybe we should be figuring out how they do it? Why are they so popular that they can even THINK about charging the same price for practice as we would for an entire evening's worth of entertainment? If it is successful then we can draw the conclusion that those that opened their wallets felt like it was better to do that than the FRC, UC, Knox Nat's or even a weekly show somewhere.

Sensitivity training for shooters will be held Sunday afternoon at 1PM.
NAPCAR fans deserve to pay $20 bucks to watch one half burned out star "Practice"
I sort of wonder if a Smoke Johnson might just show up at the Ultimate Challenge unannounced.
Now that would be a bargain

NASCAR does it with money and influence. They have a TV contract with several networks that influences programming every step of the way, right down to local affiliates' local newscasts. To build a place like Iowa Speedway, you need lots of money and influence and inter-connections with the corporate folks. Knoxville Raceway is the marque facility in dirt track racing but, in reality, it's a county fair track controlled by board members. Never has had much corporate involvement. That cuts the influence down to almost nothing in the bigger world. There just ins't much outside involvement. Frankly, I don't want Knoxville or sprint car racing to do what NASCAR does. Believe me, if it did, you probably wouldn't want to go there.
I DO blame local media because they should be held to a higher account as "journalists" and know better. They should have repect for their profession and their audience. Instead, it's checkbook policy and nothing else matters. They ceased to have any credibility to me long ago. I guess we live in the "Age of Shoddy" when it comes to communications and what is newsworthy.

I believe you can sell anything to just about anyone if it is marketed properly. If you have the resources ($) to relentlessly keep putting something in front of people they begin to believe they should be paying attention, that others are buying it and that they need it. It creates a demand for itself. Even though I know this I'm still influenced by clever advertising campaigns. That's how effective it can be.
