If memory serves me correctly, I think that is a very good number compared to the last couple of years by this point. I think they will get the 100 cars if they are at 83 already.

The current qualifying format only needs 80 cars.

How did the track hold up with 166 cars? I don't see how they could put enough water on it to keep it racy.

I am guessing the car count will be very "close" to 100 cars. Seems there is alot of local and non-local drivers not listed yet.Smile

Kenny Jacobs is a First Time Thursday Nationals Winner

by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, Iowa (August 15) - Kenny Jacobs became a surprise winner Thursday night at the 31st annual Knoxville Nationals when he held off a stellar field of nationals competitors to take the 20-lap feature event. The victory enabled him to earn enough points to grab the coveted outside row one starting position in the championship feature on Saturday night.

"It feels good to win a race at the famous Knoxville Raceway," Jacobs said in victory lane about his initial win on the half-mile oval. "I was so nervous those last couple of laps just waiting for something to break," Jacobs confessed. "Deuce Turrill made a couple of changes on that red. We just wanted to balance the car so it drove off both rear wheels instead of just the right rear. It was pretty easy to drive after that.

In the feature event, Jacobs was only able to take the lead on lap fourteen when a front chute wreck forced a restart. To that point, Johnny Herrera had taken command of the race and was setting the pace, but the violent Lee Brewer, Jr. flip brought the race to a halt and bunched the cars again in single file realignment

When the green flag again flew Jacobs dove to the low side of the track and took the lead from race-long front runner Herrera as they flew past the flag stand. Doug Wolfgang was able to get by Herrera as well despite having lost his power steering earlier in the event. Wolfie was never able to mount a serious threat for the lead in the remaining laps and settled for a runner-up finish. Herrera remained in the third place position.

Defending Knoxville track champion Danny Lasoski finished fourth after a miserable start caused by a wheel banging incident relegated him near the back of the pack. Equally unfortunate was fifth place finisher Mark Kinser who spun out all by himself in turn four on lap eight as he too then reported to the rear of the field.

Jimmy Sills and Frankie Kerr took sixth and seventh respectively. Stevie Smith, a second place runner until a flat tire on lap eight forced him to the tail, finished eighth. Chris Eash was ninth and 1990 Nationals Rookie of the Year, Joey Kuhn completed the top ten finishers.

Qualifying heat races went to Kinser, Lasoski, Jacobs, and Gary Wright. Kuhn took the B feature as 84 cars came to the line for qualifying time trials before a huge grandstands crowd.

Friday National Events Completed on Saturday with Tommie Estes, Jr. a Winner

by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, Iowa (August 16 & 17) - Tommie Estes, Jr. celebrated his 33rd birthday as he led the entire 20-lap distance to take the rain-delayed Friday night non-qualifiers feature on Saturday afternoon

The unusual afternoon show came about as a result of a brief yet potent cloud burst after the fifth heat race on Friday night. Yet another record crowd had settled in for the evening before the rains came. Track officials made a valiant effort to work the dirt track back into racing condition with push trucks and race cars but called the event just after 2 a.m. when the half-mile oval appeared to be little better for the efforts.

Two false starts plagued the feature event as first Larry Neighbors barrel-rolled in turn one on the initial green. The second attempt start saw Keith Kauffman get tapped causing him to careen into the front stretch guardrail. The Kauffman sprinter was then struck hard by Billy Vielhauer and Garry Brazier. The third attempted start was a charm as pole sitter Estes, Jr. led flag to flag in a race reminiscent of the 1980 afternoon championship feature.

"Afternoon shows are really hard on everybody and the tires and everything. It's just a guessing game," an exhausted Estes said after his dusty win. "The race track wasn't very wide. It laid rubber down and there was only one groove."

Australian youngster Brooke Tatnell chased the leader the entire distance and settled for second. Minnesotan Gary Lusk took third, Greg Hodnett captured fourth and Ronnie Day finished fifth. Lou Kennedy, Jr., Jaymie Moyle, Leonard Lee, Sparky Howard and Dave Hollamon formed the top ten finishers.

Capturing non-qualifier heat events on Friday were Estes, Jr., Kauffman, Jeff Swindell, Garry Brazier and Tatnell. Heat event winners on Saturday were Hodnett, Vielhauer and Day. Rick England won the C Feature and Nick Losasso was victorious in the B Feature.

The Race of States Feature and the Mystery Feature were canceled and the purse money ($32,000) offered for those races was divided among the 120 drivers ($266 each) who signed in and waited through the long night.

Steve Kinser Takes Seventh Nationals Title

by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, Iowa (August 17) - "The best one's the one you just won," was the way Steve Kinser described his seventh crown after winning the 31st annual NAPA Knoxville Nationals before 22,000 spectators at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night.

Kinser, whose first six titles came in 1980-81-82 and 1986-87-88 swept to the thirty-lap $50,000 victory in the Karl Kinser prepared No. 11 Maxim from the pole position. He was challenged only by fellow front row starter Kenny Jacobs after beating Jacobs to the first turn at the start of the event.

"The car's been running really super good the last two months. I have to thank Karl Kinser. We have a super team, "Kinser said in victory lane. "I just ran as hard as I could and everything felt pretty good until about the last ten laps when I started having trouble getting around the cushion."

Lap nineteen saw Jacobs make his only move for the top spot when he nosed ahead briefly in turns one and two as Kinser slowed behind lapped traffic. "I couldn't have caught him unless something drastic happened, but it didn't," Jacobs later said. Jacobs followed Kinser the entire 30-lap distance to finish 100 yards behind the winner as the checkereds fell at just past midnight. The runner-up position paid $25,000.

Only one caution slowed the event when on lap thirteen Dave Blaney hit the front stretch fence and lost a front wheel. All cars managed to miss the errant tire but Doug Wolfgang ran over it one lap later when the race had actually slowed under caution. The incident cut Wolfie's right front tire forcing him to the pits and relegating him to the tail once the race resumed.

Mark Kinser, who ran third for much of the event, finished in that position and collected $15,000. A spirited and late-race battle saw Sammy Swindell edge Johnny Herrera for fourth. Swindell received $10,000 and Herrera took home $9,000. Stevie Smith, Doug Wolfgang, Danny Smith, Jack Hewitt and Chris Eash formed the top ten finishers.

Four preliminary features were contested prior to the championship main event. Australian Brooke Tatnell won the E Main, the D Main went to Kenny McCarl and Kenny Hansen took the C Main. Frankie Kerr captured the 22-lap B Main as he transferred to the championship feature along with Joe Gaerte, Steve Beitler and Randy Smith. The Beitler pit crew received the Best Appearing Crew award while Paul Lotier was named 1991 Rookie of the Nationals for his 11th place finish in the National Championship race.

We're at 83 now, and there are 15 locks remaining. There's also a bunch of guys who ran last year that aren't entered. So good chance we'll get to 100 or more.

On my 'not entered yet' list that I think should be racing, I've got (26): Saldana, C Dollansky, Allard, Gravel, Rahmer, Haftertepe, Holtgraver, Sweet, Pittman, Sammy, Darrah, Meyers, Hodnett, Dover, Bruce, Dale Blaney, G Dollansky, Solwold, Hannagan, Jac, Caleb Helms, Henderson, Trevor Reynolds, Scott Winters, Jamie Veal, and Greg Wilson. The bottom 4 on the list are a little iffy, but very possible given what they've done in the past.

I have another dozen (12) that have run Knoxvile this year and/or ran Nationals last year. They are: Marty Perovich, Jody Rosenboom, Skylar Prochaska, Casey Mack, Dustin Clark, Mark Johnson, Jim Moughan, Balog, Brandon Thone, Joey Moughan, Trey Starks, and Sheldon Haud. I would think half of this group would show up to race, not expecting too much more.

Wildcards I have are: Tom Buch's #13, Dave Blaney in his own #10 that he has won two 410 features with, Rick Ferkle's #0, Austen Wheatley, the red 66 car that Hannagan drove earlier this year, and Burch's 1M. If Lasoski is out of the 1z for Nationals, he'll probably drive the 1M... so that entry would be a wash. Blaney is probably the only real likely entry here. Either way, that gets us to 116... which would be pretty awesome.

by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, Iowa (August 14) - Six-time Knoxville Nationals champion Steve Kinser took the initial night of qualifications at the 31st annual Knoxville Nationals.

WOW...those are some damn good memories. 1991 was a blast...runner-up in the King's Royal and runner-up in the Nationals. Both to the mighty Steve Kinser!

Anybody remember the shirt my dad wore under his firesuit at the Nationals? Calvin from Calvin & Hobbs saying "Oh no, not Kinser. Anyone but Kinser. NOT KINSER AGAIN!"

One of the best summers of my life!

I remember those years well Kendra. That was back when the nationals were for real. Only top fifty made the heats and they inverted the whole race. Back when you had to earn every point instead of all the extra chances they have now. Plus you didnt have extra laps and pit stops. It was a real sprint car race! 87 to 97 were the best years Knoxville will ever see. Im very fond of those memories. Man we had some fun! I also remember the airplane flying around on Saturday pulling the banner that read "Anybody but Kinser".

The current qualifying format only needs 80 cars.

I believe their is a magic number where they go back to the full heat inverts. They only invert 8 because low car counts near or under 100 mean extremely slow cars would start on row 1. I believe it's been said that if the car count is 60 per night they would go back to fully inverted heats. That is why car count, and quality car count matters so much. Plus 80 cars doesn't fill the Saturday show. Would cut Saturday down to 4 features.

With 8 car inverts there is NO incentive for more than 80 cars to show up.

With 10 car inverts there was NO incentive for more than 100 cars to show up and eventually they didn't. Same thing will eventually happen with 80.

The guys that time worse than 40 are screwed.

They have 0 chance of making the qualifying night feature and taking home enough money to cover much of anything at all. Might as well save the fuel and leave the car at home.

I tend to disagree. With that logic there would have been no reason for more than 100 cars to show up in 1991 either. Yet they did. In fact your odds of making the 8 car invert today would be better with 100 cars than making the 10 car invert in a field of 160. You just have to beat 10 cars in TT's to make the 8 car invert. With 160 cars you had to TT better than 30 cars to make the heats.

So if Donny S is number 81 he should stay home ?

How many yrs have 160 cars shown up, recently?

It cost a whole lot more to travel to a show than it did in 1991.

With costs going up those guys need the chance at those qualifying night $'s.

It is not how many cars it is how fast they are

If you are fast you don't care if there are 200

limit the show to 80 that would make a good show right or maybe not
