Great nite of racing ...track lightning fast and a great field.....some very nasty crashes especially the 81 car down the front stretch,,,glad everyone walked away. Glad to see Doug an Justin Clark get missed by the flying front axle..I hope the woman that was hit in the grandstands was okay they never did say how she was doing. All I know is the ambulance went outside the track to the back of the grandstand.

I don't like seeing drivers hurt, but it really disturbs me when fans get hurt...even when there's really not much that could have been done about it. Hope everyone is OK. I still remember Justin Clark getting knocked out by that wing panel a couple years ago and how weird that seemed at the time...until a front axle went to Dingus and that was weirder. Odd things happen at the race track, even if people think they can't.

I passed the ambulance behind the stands as they were putting her into it. She seemed OK, no visible injuries, and looked more embarrassed than hurt. With Brown in front at the time and it already after 11, there didn't seem to be any reason to stay. Agan was a madman in the 360s. Could have given Garner a run for the points championship if he wasn't so far ahead already.

No fans were hit or touched by anything off a race car, the woman in question fell down and skinned her knee and arm as she was running away AFTER the axle stopped rolling. This is what an ambulance crew member reported to their spouse via text.

First of all the axle DID NOT LAND IN THE STANDS... and no one was actually hit by the axle. The lady hurt her leg after running from the axle that landed on teh east side of the grand stands.

Has been some talk in past of connecting front axil to frame with some sort of straps to frame. This should be looked into more. They would weigh almost nothing. They may not keep all of the axils from flying off, but they could keep most of them on the car.

Thank you Tony for the update. From sitting in section D it didn't look like the axle landing close to any fans, but scary moment. couldn't imagine Doug or Justin perspective from the flag stand, bet the axle had to be pretty close. Knoxville safety rocks and is the best.

Front tubes and front part of frame were missing when they towed it back to the pits. Brought several chunks of the front of the frame back. Axle would need to be tethered to the frame at least behind the radiator, any farther forward and the frame the axle was tethered to would just sail into the stands with it.

I agree, Humpin. Your point is I think we need to look at it and envision what could have happened and take steps to prevent it. I don't think it would take much. That was terribly close to Doug and Justin. That could have been real bad. Glad Austin and the lady are ok.

she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss

Vanh- I was replying to a comment about tethering and if it would keep large parts like axles from getting into the stands. I did not say that THAT AXLE did get into the stands. Can you comprehend what you read???

I always cringe when I hear of anything getting through the fence at Knoxville when you consider how good it is - probably better than 95% of dirt tracks out there. When I think of how inadequate the fences are at the tracks in California - with the exception of Tulare and maybe the PAS - it's downright terrifying.

if measure can be taken to keep axles from flying...then you don't have to be in a position of splitting hairs about where it specifically landed or stopped flying.
I undertand some have public relations responsibilities...but dont look a gift horse in the mouth if measures could be taken for LESS axels to sail to begin with. I don't want to hear about an axle flying at the folks in the pits either!

Could it tether to the Hans straps? Two birds one strap.

There was also an axle sailing from a 360 in their A, no where near the stands, but maybe it's time to tether.

Or a drive line cover. You would think the carrier of the insurance at the tracks would come up with some requirements.
