Great nite of racing ...track lightning fast and a great field.....some very nasty crashes especially the 81 car down the front stretch,,,glad everyone walked away. Glad to see Doug an Justin Clark get missed by the flying front axle..I hope the woman that was hit in the grandstands was okay they never did say how she was doing. All I know is the ambulance went outside the track to the back of the grandstand.
|
The woman that was hit was not in the stands at the time. She had been down to the restrooms, and was just on her way back up to her seat when she was hit from behind. She had just barely made it to the stairs leading up to the bleachers. She was hit in the back of the leg. She had a lot of pain in her calf. The excellent training of the Knoxville staff knew it might be broken and sent her to the hospital. Nothing was probably announced because she was still in the ER when the races got over. She has a broken fibula and muscle damage. She should be okay in 4-6 weeks.

That's the story I heard from someone that was very close to the incident. I am a little puzzled as to why track employees and others are posting that the only injury was a skinned up knee due to falling.
The same person told me it was NOT the axle that struck the lady and broke her leg but a bolt on suspension piece that was carried back through the fence and given to safety crew immediately so the person didn't get a good look at it

Depends on how you look at it.. I'd say he's lucky to walk away from this wreck & the trip thru the billboards last year!

if anything can happen it will happen at a race track.... the track has been very lucky in the past and I'm worried that it's just a matter of time until something major is planted in the stands during a big show.. Hope fixes are being addressed...If what happened last Sat. had of happened on Sat. of the nationals the outcome would have possibly been very grim....

So you say it didn't go in the stands but it went beside the skate pit? Is that not IN the stands?

Something major has been "planted in the stands" before at Knoxville, during the nationals, more than once. With a very grim outcome.....

I remember a shock, what else???? that was bad enough but ... Oh I do remember a complete car under the stands at an afternoon outlaw show with packed stand.. that was a totally lucky deal.. No body was hurt...... who else has been really really hurt on the outside of the track in an approved area??... It can and will happen again, the FB should be studying the options right now...

Or a drive line cover. You would think the carrier of the insurance at the tracks would come up with some requirements.
|
At most tracks, when it exists, the pit insurance provided with a pit pass is SECONDARY to the personal policy of the affected party....and then, the release you sign when you enter the pits usually absolves the track of most responsibilities concerning activites connected to the show....JMS

July 21, 2000 ....Doran Doty's left rear came off the car and did got into the stands. It was his tire and rim but did not hit anyone. Doran dead lifted the car so he could get out. That night was a night for bad wrecks as I believe several of our racers were taken to the hospital.

I passed the ambulance behind the stands as they were putting her into it. She seemed OK, no visible injuries, and looked more embarrassed than hurt. With Brown in front at the time and it already after 11, there didn't seem to be any reason to stay. Agan was a madman in the 360s. Could have given Garner a run for the points championship if he wasn't so far ahead already.
|
Did the gal hit by the axle look embarrassed or in shock? Her leg was broke by the axle hitting her.

No fans were hit or touched by anything off a race car, the woman in question fell down and skinned her knee and arm as she was running away AFTER the axle stopped rolling. This is what an ambulance crew member reported to their spouse via text.
|
You are mistaken. The woman in question was NOT running. She had her back to the axle & did NOT see it coming. The woman WAS hit by the axle & her leg was broken. Maybe they were talking about another woman? I didn't know that ambulance attendants were allowed to talk about things like this in IA, in most states you lose your job (even if you are volunteer) if you talk about cases.
