I have not read any postings of over zealous law enforcement at the Nationals this year. Last year and before numerous fans complained about unwarented tickets and bullying by the local authorities. Especially the State Police for writing tickets for exceeding the speed limit when fans argued they were not. How was it this year, any complaints?

I didn't personally have any issues, but I saw several people stopped for driving a golf cart on the sidewalk or going down the highway. I also heard many comment of getting a warning rather than a ticket.

HPD ... Harvey Police Department ??? Seriously, I heard little complaints for the whole 10 days including Mahaska CoSO, D.O.T. the Oskaloosa police and every agency working Knoxville/Marion County as opposed to last year. Maybe they all got the message they need to ease up just a little ??

I think new leadership at city hall may have something to do with it as well....

The Police Chief (and therefore the police staff) take their ques from the City Manager and the City Council. I know for fact that the city manager, the mayor and the council were made aware of the article written by Doug Auld after the 2011 Nationals.

Having said that, there really is not much that the City can do when it comes to the State Troopers except have meetings and ask them to be more couteous (obviously if your the DesMoines Register (RAGBRAI), the University of Iowa or Iowa State University they don't do ANYTHING to anyone unless they are drunk driving) to our guests.

The guys sitting beside me this year (first timers) couldn't believe the LACK of Police Presence throughout town and at the races. They actually commented that they were surprised at how well behaved people were given the fact that security/police were basically non-existent all week.

I never really thought about it until now. The only two places I saw any cops all weekend was in the track and in the Dingus Friday afternoon.

I have been going to the Nationals for 35 plus years and yes I am a late night partier. I have had plenty of county patrol and even Knoxville Police stop us and talk to us in a courteous manner. I gusee I have never been a smart ass with any of them and I stopped doing whatever it was that concerned them and had no problems. This year was very noticeably down on patrol enforcement. I even noticed at the North Campground they werent driving by our spot on golf carts every 5 minutes, although I do like that because we have had several coolers stolen over there and the beefed up patrol seemed to keep those incidents down. I have always thought the patrol around Knoxville has been pretty decent, it just seems to be the ones that go bizerk that create the issues. I have plenty of fun over there sometimes too much fun, as a matter of fact I am finally getting blood back into my blood stream, I think I had mostly Jager in my bloodstream over in Knoxville.

Only complaints I've heard were about them not policing drunks in the stands. I don't envy the police, tough job. No complaints from me, last 2 years

Concur with "nice" police during my 4 days. No problems with our golf cart rides but I guess that is easy when you obey the rules. Some of my buddies at there campsite have been harassed the past couple of years, but no sign of local police this year. Hope its a sign of things to come. (coming back to our place across town at 4 am after turn 3-4 party on golf cart was a little scary, but we made it! just saying)

Guy was like 55 yrs old and maybe stumbled a little. Wasn't going to hurt anyone but themselves. I had a blast during my 8 days... Blew a couple grand+ so I did my part!!

My first time there and I was stunned to see people partying and having a good time while police looked on just in case stuff jumped off. Knoxville made Gold Cup look like grammar school and lo and behold, partiers kept a lid on it for the most part and people were having fun. I couldn't help but compare it to California where there would have been numerous arrests, protestors with signs and complaints of noise in and around the area. The midwest positively did it right during Knoxville. Hell, the go kart place even let a guy on with flip flops and they allowed contact between drivers...California would have banned flip flops and made it a point in their pre-race meeting with drivers that contact wouldn't be tolerated before slowing them down.

I wouldn't complain about squat if you were a local and/or someone who might not have had such a great time at Knoxville. It could be much much worse.

Yes, we got pulled over for exceeding the speed limit (we were), but the officer who pulled us over let us go after making sure we had a designated driver (we did), which is what he said he was after when the speed gave him a reason to pull us over.

Again, kudos to the Knoxville police and surrounding areas. Ron

Cops will *usually* give you up to 10 over -- depending on if it's a residential area or highway - they're usually more lenient on highways than residential/in-town ... but at 11mph over ... well.....

Me - I usually try to be no more than 6-7 over and definitely never be the "fastest car on the track...".

I imagine that you were the one being a jerk and you certainly deserved a ticket going that fast.

As long as you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about.
