This car ran in 1968, it came out of Fort Scott, Kansas, built by John Layne.

Looks like any other car from that era but with a sedan body huh?
Well, it was an offset chassis, one of several that were in the territory during the late 60's and early 70's.
An extensive search was made to find the remains of this car, and for pictures too. The search was abandoned for the car, but pics not yet found are still welcomed for sure. Why you ask?
THEY BE CLONING DA CAR! That's right, and this time they went with a builder who has the qualities to do such an endeavor--the original builder., John Layne. How lucky can ya get?
The '28 sedan body is being "perfected" for the project ( no animals, humans, or environmental treasures were harmed during the body's alteration. In fact the owner has donated much of his time to help with a local youth softball team, to further offset the societal impact of one (1) 1928 sedan body being cut u........altere........perfected, yeah that's it, 'perfected' for a supermodified.)
Do not try this at home...............unless you're building cool cars!
Current state of progress on the chassis

Mike Pogue of Claremore has always been huge fan of the original car, and when he had a chance to pull this off, he jumped right on it.

Ray Cate sent this one in, it's a pic of the Speedway Motors dirt track roadster during it's restoration-which was being done as well by John Layne.

The finished version

Ray,... I think the roadsters like Dale drove were 96" wheelbase so they could change the front spring mount to add 4". The car is on page 91 of High Plains Thunder with a top on it. I measured the wheelbase on page 91 & the #81 car is shorter than the one Jackie Howerton #1. Johnny Layne's name is included as owner but I think he was the sole owner. The Brown name included as car owner started the Western Trucking Co in Ft Scott KS about that time & later moved to Carthage Mo. He was a former midget driver from New Jersey. I think his son started driving a sprint car in the late 80s. The son would be about 55 now. Johnny Layne is restoring the car now. It is in his basement with the Don Brown built roadster that Joe Saldana owned /drove and is now owned by Bill Smith of Speedway Motors. Johnny Layne is having a third annual racing picnic at his house Sept 20 on Sunday. He sent me (& others) about 20 hand bills to invite anybody that is interested in racing. Some of the pictures Curt Grogan posted on the RFTP were taken at last years picnic. The black #3 CAE car & Greg Weld's #1 USAC car are 2 taken there. If you are interested in coming, I will send you a hand bill. Luther sent me this e-mail a couple years ago and i do not think that he would mind me puting it on the site . I have a couple more where he talks about why he did not build aroadster for the dirt tracks. Ray

Ray,...This is the roadster that Joe Saldana owned/drove from the beginning of the 66 season until he went USAC. It ran as a super around the area until Bill Smith of Speedway motors bought it. He now has Johnny Layne restoring it. It was the purple color when Joe owned it. This (&2 other) roadster was built by Don Brown in California along with Greg Weld's # 92 and Don Brown's own that they each drove. Hope you enjoy the pictures. The Brown of Carthage is the same person I was referring too. ...Luther

Then the car was stretched to the longer wheelbase, and fitted with the sedan body, seen above.

It has been noted here the 'original' car sold in 1969 right?
Well, today there are 2 (two) clones of the car under construction-
one of the earlier version- it sits in Laynes shop to be finished

Okay, so now we have another offset car that took over for the Layne/Mcdaniels team in 1969.
Here, the new 1969 offset car has won the pole for a 50 lapper at Muskogee. The Zink offset is on the 3rd back.

This is a photo of the Greg Weld roadster from 1963 at the latest. Do not remember for sure wether it ran in 1962 or not. Greg won the points at Lakeside in 1963 in this car. After Greg went to run in other racing groups a Wichita driver managed to roll this car. As to where it went or if it was put back together I do not know. The number 81 photo at the Topeka Fairgrounds track looks very close.

I'm thinking this an earlier car Greg built for himself. It looks like Greg took a liking to offset cars. At this time in his life, roadsters were still on top at Indy and maybe Greg used this avenue to help him get there.
Don Brown didn't build it, but it was winner too.

Great picture, I am trying to figure out who is who. The car behind Dale McDanieel is Jack Belk and his car 37. I think that Jack won this race. Is that right Tim? the 77 on the outside pole is the Boommershine car, Stanley Durret might be in it.Other than the Pink Zink I do not recognize any other cars Surly there is some body out there that knows who some of these cars are.

Isn't that the black and red #37 car, 2nd row inside? Could that Be Tiger Bob Williams of Missouri?

Again the amazing thing about this photo is not the cars but the crowd. It wasn't uncommon for packed stands in this era right up until the late 70's early 80's? Then did we see these kinds of crowds at say the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Oklahoma State Fairgrounds (OKC), Tulsa State Fairgrounds, Topeka State Fairgrounds or Muskogee after the mid 80's??
