Australians Looking For 50,000 Revenge
The battle lines have been drawn in the greatest dash for cash of ‘em all – the Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway on January 2 and 3.
The Australians want to stop the Yanks from continuing their monopoly but again in 2011 face a herculean task ending one of the most incredible winning sequences in world sprintcar racing.
As we approach the twelfth running of the $50,000 event, an Australian driver has yet to stand atop the podium – such is the all conquering domination of the American professionals!
To be even more specific, the $50,000 is the personal property of Dakota’s Donny Schatz who will attempt to walk away with his NINTH winning pay cheque!
This is HIS race, interrupted only by Indiana’s Joey Saldana (2003) and “The King” Steve Kinser (2009).
The 2011 running of the Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic on paper looks the best-ever with over 54 nominations featuring the best of the best from Down Under and the Land of Stars and Stripes.
“Forget about winning, just even making the A-Main is going to be a tough gig. The racing will be ruthless,” Race Director Rod Britton said today.
NASCAR ace Tony Stewart heads the latest American challenge which also includes Schatz, Saldana, Brian Montieth, Craig Dollansky, Jason Sides, Shane Stewart, Cody Darrah and Jason Johnson.
The Australian assault is spearheaded by six-time National Champion Garry Brazier who was a sensational winner of the 31st Valvoline Australian Sprintcar Grand Prix on December 27 at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway and the first Australian home against the Yanks in the Sprintcar International (December 29).
Brazier filled third in the 2006 $50,000, while former national titleholder Robbie Farr has come close a couple of times with podium finishes in 2008 (second) and 2009 (third). Several years earlier Kerry Madsen took third in 2003.
Triple Australian Sprintcar Champion Brooke Tatnell was the most successful Aussie in last year’s $50,000 Classic with a third placing behind runner-up Tim Shaffer and perennial winner Schatz.
Tony Stewart has been in great form this time around at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway and has not been off the podium following his runner-up finish in the Valvoline GP and third placing in the December 29 Sprintcar International.
Schatz is honing to the task following his third and second place finishes from the two international events completed during the Sydney Speedway Festival.
Saldana was most impressive as he raced around the outside of race leader Schatz on the final corner to win the Sprintcar International.
Saldana, driving for Kasey Kahne Racing, was in superb touch a couple of days ago and hopes to make amends after he was over taken by ultimate winner Schatz in the latter stages of the 2007 $50,000 Classic.
Jason Sides also looked strong with a Sprintcar International fifth placing and is obviously showing the strong form that took him to a fifth placing in the 2010 World of Outlaws Championship.
Cody Darrah looked the goods and led the 35-lap Sprintcar International until an untimely spin took him out of contention with eight laps remaining.
A fourth placing on December 29 by Craig Dollansky clearly indicated he will be a major contender, while Montieth, Shane Stewart and Jason Johnson cannot be discounted.
Johnson will be hoping to reverse the finishing order in 2003 when, after leading into the latter stages, he pulled up one short as Saldana got the prize.

I've only been following Australian racing via the internet for the past three or four years but it seems like every year more and more of the best American Sprintcar drivers head to the warm part of the world during our cold winter. Partly for vacation but mostly for the racing. I suppose there are Austrlians that don't appreciate this number of Americans coming but would guess the huge majority appreciate it. On a similar note a lot of Americans resent Indy Car racing having only a couple Americans participating but again its a small minority of fans.
Knee deep in snow and more on the way.

Davey Ray To Race At Tyrepower Sydney Speedway On January 3
American Davey Ray is a late nomination for the speedcar portion of the $50,000 Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic programme at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway, January 3.
Ray is currently on international midget racing duty in New Zealand and has accepted the invitation from Barry and Steve Graham to drive their Spike chassis Hawk in Sydney.
Ray will make a quick trip across the Tasman to return to the iconic Sydney venue where he has enjoyed National Championship success in past seasons.
“I am looking forward to again racing in Sydney and it’s great to again drive for the Graham team,” Ray said today.
Davey, who earlier in the season took out the Fig 34 event at Perth Motorplex, is a two times Australian Speedcar Champion.
Ray also has declared his intentions to contest the 2011 National Midget Championship at the Lismore Speedway in February.
“The inclusion of Davey Ray on our speedcar programme for January 3 is a terrific bonus for us on what will already be a great night,” race Director Rod Britton said today.
“Davey is a top professional who has enjoyed title winning success at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway and he will certainly again be a worthy contender for feature race honours on January 3.”

The color of owner Steven Graham's midget is awfully close to Channellock Blue that Swindell used to have---one of my favorite colors for an open wheel car. Back here in the states (or overseas), it would be great, if Sammy Swindel and Steve Kinser, in their final few races before retirement, got special paint jobs and sponsorship, Kinser from Quaker state, with that all Green car and Swindell from Channellock with their all-blue paint job.

I have to disagree about the Channel Lock car. To me the TMC car was his best looking ride.

50,000-to-win Classic Washed Out
Tonight’s race meeting – the $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic has been washed-out due to rain. The race meeting in its entirety will now be rescheduled to Friday, January 14, and Saturday, January 15.
Monday, January 3, was the second consecutive night of rain in Sydney leaving management with no alternative other than to reschedule the entire race meeting.
“Many of our loyal Sprintcar competitors have commitments elsewhere in the country later in this week and with the Sydney weather forecast advising of further rain in coming days, we were forced to reschedule the entire event,” said Tyrepower Sydney Speedway Race Director, Rod Britton.
“The weekend of January 14 and 15 is the only weekend available on the remaining on the calendar where the vast majority of competitors can return to the venue.”
The rescheduled $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic on Friday and Saturday, January 14 and 15 will feature American Superstars Tony Stewart, Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana, Cody Darrah and Craig Dollansky as well as Australia’s finest Sprintcar talent.

Revised Date Change For Rescheduled $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar C Author : Tyrepower Sydney Speedway
The management of Tyrepower Sydney Speedway wishes to advise that the $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic will be run this Friday and Saturday, January 7 and 8.
Initially, Tyrepower Sydney Speedway advised that it would be conducted the following weekend; however an unfavourable long-term weather forecast suggested that the $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic maybe lost entirely with no chance of further rescheduling.
“Should Sydney suffer from unfavourable weather on January 14 and 15, their race fans would have lost their last opportunity to witness the likes of Tony Stewart, Donny Schatz and Joey Saldana,” said Tyrepower Sydney Speedway General Manager, David Lander.
“An opportunity presented itself with fine weather forecast this Friday and Saturday to conduct the rescheduled event this weekend.
“It is a far too important event to lose and we owe every Sydney Speedway fan a further chance to witness not only the best Sprintcar drivers in Australia, but the best Sprintcar drivers in the world,”
Night one of the rescheduled $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic will be conducted this Friday night, January 7.
Night two of the rescheduled $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic will be conducted this Friday night, January 8.
Supporting classes for Friday, January 7 will be advised in the near future. Due to the events loss due to weather the management has added another International Sprintcar paying $10,000-to-win fixture to be conducted on Wednesday, January 12. To summarise future race meetings:
Friday, January 7: Night one of the $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic Saturday, January 8: Night two of the $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic Wednesday, January 12: Sprintcar International - $10,000-to-win Saturday, January 15: Sprintcar International - $10,000-to-win

Americans Announced For $50,000-to-win Scott Darley Sprintcar Classic
Five Americans are confirmed starters in the Scott Darley $50,000 Sprintcar Classic at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway on January 7 and 8.
NASCAR ace Tony Stewart heads the line-up that also includes defending $50,000 Donny Schatz, former winner Joey Saldana, Cody Darrah and Jason Sides.
The re-scheduling of the $50,000 Classic has been a promotional nightmare courtesy of continual rain which has washed out meetings not only in Sydney but along the entire Australian East Coast.
“We have already had eight washed out meetings this season, which in past years has been our season average,” Tyrepower Sydney Speedway Manager David Lander said today.
“Even more incredible is that we have had only one Sprintcar meeting that was held under blue sky.”
Schatz will be attempting to win his ninth $50,000 Sprintcar Classic which represents a record for any major event on the Australian sprintcar scene.
Stewart has not been off the podium since the start of the international season at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway, having filed major placings in both the 31st Valvoline Australian Sprintcar Grand Prix and the Sprintcar International.
Saldana enters the $50,000 as the form driver following his victory in the Sprintcar International on December 29.
The Australian challenge to the Americans is headed by six time National Champion Garry Brazier who headed the Americans to the chequered flag in the Valvoline Australian Sprintcar GP.
The full American representation is still not final with the possibility for further additions expected for the remainder of Thursday, January 6.
