I'm trying to make a move to Sprint Car racing but, do so on a limited budget. (kind of an oxymoron right?) I have found a great deal on a non-wing 2002 Avenger 305 race ready. I know it's not one of the Big 3 but, I'm wondering if Avenger is even still in business? I can't seem to find anything on them. Was wanting some help on this. Am I going to be SOL on parts and setup help? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

relax....an avenger is a great chassis....a freind of mine has ran one for years..all the components are generic...when you get the car-measure the radius rods, torsion arm off sets, tie rods and drag links and keep a book on the car so if you wreck you can put it right.as far as set-up goes...read Stevie Smiths chassis book and get a copy of Sill's tape ..once you know how a sprint car works-you can learn how to adjust one to your needs...if the cars 'race 'ready..measure it up and start there.

Thanks for the tips. I have read the Steve Smith book twice and still go back and review it when I have a question. I'll definetly get out the tape measure if and when I get it home. I spoke to Avenger on the phone. The gentleman I spoke with was very nice. He is going to email me some setup notes. I'll check out the Jimmy Sills DVD. Thanks for the help.

Another question I have is that I'm 6'3" and was wondering if those cars fit a taller driver better than others? If not I can move the seat back and maybe raise the halo a couple inches.

Your helmet should be about 2" below the frame rails, just raising the halo isn't safe enough don't sacrifice safety if your to tall get a 2" tall chassis

If you are serious about buying this car,let me give you some advice from someone who learned the hard way.If the seat in the car does not fit you,go ahead and buy a seat, have the guy take the one in the car out,and set yours in the car and see how you fit.You need to be comfortable in the car or you will be miserable and wont drive it well.My first car didn't have enough leg room and I hated it.The post above was also right on about not wanting your head too close to the top of the cage.I heard of a guy wrecking a couple of years ago, when he flipped, his top wing came off right off the bat. When he came down,he landed cage first. The track was soft, may have been hot laps, and the top of his cage actually sunk in the soft dirt which caused the top of his head,or helmet to also hit the track. It broke his neck and killed him.If you need the tall cage, don't settle for anything else. One more thing,if it doesn't have a surelock shifter in it,put one in it,it's the only way to go,much better than those push pull jobs.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. It is appreciated. If my helmet turns out to be closer than I would like I was looking into having the rear portion of the top loop of the cage raised. Like what they do on the new Eagles. I would also add a halo bar across the top. I'm going to look at it tonight so we'll see. Thanks again

Well I went and looked at it tonight. It's all there. He said I can come back Saturday to hear it run. It has a Winters 4.86 and a new 305 with a used Hillborn 2 3/16 injection and new World Product heads. I would definitely have to move the seat down and back. The other thing I'm not sure about is that it has a 6 pin front end. It comes with a spare front that's the same way. Can it be converted over to a splined front end or do I have to start from scratch with a new front end? The car appears straight. I've thought about buying it complete and buying a new tall cage chassis and bolt everything onto it. Will I be able to transfer everything over If I buy a Maxim, Eagle, or XXX? Thanks for any advice you guys have.

Unless you're getting a really good buy, I'd continue to look for a car; by the time you invest in spindles, wheels and the like, you'd probably be spending another $500-$1000 just to bring the car up to your needs. And cutting up and welding up an older chassis just adds to your costs.

I'm sure that if you continue to look at Hosehead classifieds, and other used race car parts sites, like Racers Used Parts Warehouse, and Indy Race Parts, you'll find something that will better meet your needs. A Maxim "tall" boy, or a Maxim "big" boy is out there. You've just got to look a little bit harder. And you'll likely find a car with the hubs/wheels that you'd like to have, too.

Oh, and you'll still have to liquidate the six pin stuff if you change it out; or you'll just have stuff left over...

Thanks for the tips. My hang up is that it has a new 305 in it but I don't know every thing about it either. It's a gamble but it's also 45 minutes from my house. I've thought about taking what I can off of it and selling the rest but I'm not sure I'll come out ahead because of the questions with the motor. It could be a deal and it could be a bust. Damn I wish I was smarter or knew someone nearby that was. Thanks for the help.

The last post is all correct in my opinion also ,you'll have to buy hubs and wheels get the frame welded and you might not be able to lower the seat most cars have the seat mounted at that height for a reason if you lower it an inch the rear end snout might hit ya in your rear end in a crash and cause much undesirable pain ,swap meet time is coming soon lots of good deals out there. Don't buy the first one that comes along ,this car sounds like you need to spend $1500 or more to get what you really want ,are the 6 pins all that's kinda out dated ?

I personally wouldn't worry about the 6 pin front end, they used to be good enough for the WoO,it will be fine for you to start out with, just a little heavier set up.I believe I know what you are looking at,my concern would be the hyper pistons.

The KB Hypereutectic pistons? I know they're not the most durable thing out there. Since I will have to modify the chassis I'm thinking I'm just going to buy the motor. If I do I'll take it to my engine builder and have him go through it. I want to say thank you to everyone that posted on here. I really appreciate the help.
