A Main: Miller, Bragg, Hansen, Cardey, Ripper, Showtime, Spencer.

Spencer -appeared- to be in an all-new car (we took a close look at it, but didn't ask).

Hansen and Miller started in front; Hansen got the drop on Blake. Greg Bragg led for a bit, then it turned into a clinic for Miller. Very good competition between Rip, Danny, Mikey and Tony for quite a bit.

Track was "wide" all night, but the lap times were not especially fast. Only 22 sprint cars and a pretty sparse crowd considering the CLS cars were also there... and running almost as fast as the CRA cars.

What the hells wrong with you guy's over there?? It's memorial day weekend, you have a cut back schedule, and you don't show up to support what you have left?

Is that the best you can do Rob? Is that what it take's, a few AZ teams to get you guy's out to your own track?

"Only 22 sprint cars"

Don't despair, something wonderful is going to happen soon that will help the 410 car counts

I sure hope so, there is no doubt that we have to do something. What I'm seeing at Perri's is what happened over here almost immediately after USAC was invited to move in. The only difference is that we had another out of state corporation as well ASCS. Oh, and by Mel Martins own account in Sprint car and Midget, a dysfunctional family running OUR track, didn't help us either.

Some of the drivers/teams chose to race midgets at Ventura. The "TOW" is a lot shorter.

I know, I know. Jimmy Crawford made the tow to Perris.

Thank you Jimmy.

Conversed for a bit with Ray Sheetz, who's been pushing dirt around at Perris since the git for -all- the shows there. He said the track "does well" with the off-road shows, and that some are being broadcast on cable TV. Figure it out; O/R is the hot deal on dirt right now. I may love my sprint cars, but the general public is into what they see on the bigger cable channels. I was darned near in diapers, but I remember how big the crowds were at Carrell when KTLA did occasional broadcasts in a six-channel TV world. Makes a -lot- of difference.

Come on Rob, don't take it personal. We were rained out here in Prescott, Show Low, and Hollywood Hills, and most of the southwest, at least the first night of the two night shows. I'm not bitching, but I am worried about the 410's, aren't you! And by the way, why would I want to drive over there? I don't see any post's that even say much about it, one way or the other...Why not?

I didn't say one word about the car count... I was talking about support by the fans.

of coarse I'm worried about the 410s it makes me sick to see whats going on,its time to ban together and get all these track owners, clubs, car owners and"promotors"together and fix it !!!I wish I had an answer but I don't other than to stop the infighting and get this sport back to where it should and could be.

Jeez guys.  It's one night in a row of low car and fan attendance at Perris this year.  All season there have been adequate to good car counts and the same fan attendance.  Sorry, but I just don't see this sport dying anytime soon.  Unless the President gets involved.  He'll kill anything that looks like free enterprise.

You have to be kidding me Mike, right?...The schedule has been cut down drastically, and there are a lot of cars in garages or with (sorry Rob) 360's in them. In other parts of the 410 non wing world they are racing EVERY night of the Memorial day weekend, and we can't get a full house and great car count for a race on Memorial day weekend, after CRA/USAC was gone for almost a month?

P.S. I hope you loose a lot of sleep worrying about our President, it makes me happy..Thanks

Kenny, no disrepect to the poster, but I have to diasgree with the refernce made to start this thread about the crowd being "sparce." Take a look at Jeff's clip on Raceway Video when the main event is doing fours and you will see the crowd is anything but sparce. Was it a great crowd, no, but it was not bad for a holiday weekend. Of the first four USAC/CRA races this year, we have had one bad crowd and that was in April.

The Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend crowds are always a tough draw at The PAS and in Southern California. In fact, we did not even open last Labor Day weekend and will not again this year. Costa Mesa Speedway has closed on the three major holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day for years) for years as their crowd dips drastically.

As far as the car count goes, it is just a matter of the current financial climate. We had 39 cars last race and nobody was complaining. Times are tough and everbody cannot run every race. A few guys ran Ventura and there were others in the pits and in the crowd on Saturday who just cannot afford to make every race right now whether it is four times a week or once a month.

I noticed that as well when I watched the Video. Memorial day weekend has always been a good weekend, as far as the history of CRA, SCRA go's, regardless of what other associations or tracks experience. I'm sorry, I apologise in advance, but if you think it's just the economy that kept cars away this weekend.

Is it me, or are people's memories fading?

Perris 05-24-09: about 1,500 people in the stands, many using $6.00-off Vista Paint coupons*, to see a 30-lap show with 22 cars.

Perris memorial day weekend '99: about 3,500 people in the stands, no one using coupons of any kind because it was a 50-lap show with about 40 cars.

Ascot memorial day weekend in '89: about 5,000 people in the stands, no one using coupons, for a 50-lap show with about 50 cars.

(Hmm. Where in the #### did I leave my Alzheimer's medicine? )

*Scott; plz correct me if coupons were not allowed Saturday; I came in through the back gate.

The Vista Paint coupons on the website show that they expired last November. The coupons from Irwindale expired a year earlier.

To begin with..going back to 1989, Free Pass's were passed around in stacks of 100. We gave them to every newspaper that printed stories and results, we gave them to every city hall within ear shot, speed shops, car dealers, hotels, etc. remember it was NOT a state fairgrounds and the concession stand was the money maker. Ascot did not hold 5,000 people if you sat them on top of each other, as far as 1999 goes, there were a total of 50 teams for the entire year, 10 of those ran 2-3 times for the whole year and 28 of those teams are not running in 2009 for no other reason than they are out of money. Now look at more recent times, there was no race in 2008. In 2007 there was 28 cars in the pits, 2 of those teams (Hansen/ Priestly) have joined forces, 3 of those teams have become one (Wier/Ballard?Cardy) 15 of those cars are out of money or were at Ventura. Go back to 2006, it was a 35 car field, over 10 of those teams are out of money. 2005, 27 cars in the pits, 11 of those teams are out of money. In 2004 there was 33 cars, 18 of those teams are out of money. BTW, 50 Cars in 1989? That was a 4 race weekend, Handford, Ascot, Tucson and Manzy. I don't remember the car count but if there was 50 cars it was because Frank Lewis was throwing around a lot of show up and tow money, in other words the economy was helping the situation. Considering Ventura, Northern Cal., Arizona and the economy I think the grandstands at PAS Saturday night were right about what I was expecting. It probably doesn't't help that Inland Empire has been hit with one of the highest number of foreclosure numbers in the country. To the fans that were there, THANK YOU ! If you missed out, hope you can make the next one. Better yet, hope you can bring a friend.

Actually Jeff, it's 83%, but then again you may be referring to 89% of the posts above you and I being made up. Joe.
