Texas World Dirt Track Championship
At Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track
Saturday's Championship Results (not complete feature results but close enough for now)
Limited Modified Championship (30 laps): 1. Travis Evans, Bullard, Tex., $2,000; 2. Dennie Geiber, Frankston, Tex., $1,500; 3. Joe Courvillion, Sharon, La., $1,000; 4. Jeff Turner, Kaufman, Tex., $900; 5. Jamie Burford, Keatchic, La., $800; 6. Andy Claiborne, Conroe, Tex., $700; 7. Ted Thomas, Post, Tex., $600; 8. Robert Vetter, Wolfe City, Tex., $500; 9. Jacob Pirkle,Midlothian, Tex., $500; 10. Chris Hennigan, Marshall, Tex., $500; 11. Bobby Malchos, Red Oak, Tex., $500; 12. Jeff Wood, Conroe, Tex., $500; 13. Ray Petty, Princeton, Tex., $500.
Caution free thirty lap feature with Evans, sporting a HUGE Texas Longhorn logo on the side of his car, didn't choke like his favorite college football team and led the feature virtually unchallenged...Randy Thomas was the only Oklahoma to make the feature finale.
Modified Championship (40 laps): 1. Terry Phillips, Springfield, Mo., $3,000; 2. Steve Arpin, Winnipeg, Canada, $2,000; 3. William Gould, Calera, Okla., $1,500; 4. Tommy Myer, Blooming Prairie, Minn., $1,250; 5. Jason Armstrong, Marshall, Tex., $1,000; 6. John Allen, Chanute, Kan., $950; 7. Timothy Culp, West Monroe, La., $900; 8. Scott Drake, Webb City, Mo., $850; 9. Tim Clonch, Quinlan, Tex., $800; 10. Eric Turner, Hermitage, Mo., $750; 11. Shane Herbert, Lafayette, La., $750; 12. Tate Cole, Muskogee, Okla., $750; 13. Chad Wheeler, Muskogee, Okla., $750.
Best "A" feature of the night. Phillips started outside front row due to his second in the dash...He would take the lead around lap two and looked to have things in hand, using the bottom of the 4/10 mile track all the way around...Arpin, however, found the very top in turns one and two to his liking then dove low coming out of turn two and heading towards turn three...Arpin would take the lead for a couple laps midway through the forty lap feature - which saw only two caution flags...Phillips looked to have it under control on the last lap but slid a bit sideways in turns three and four and allowed Arpin to dive underneath coming down for the checkard flag...Phillips would take the one car length victory, however...Tate Cole and Chad Wheeler (teammates) were only "Okies" to make the feature.
SUPR Late Models (40 laps): 1. Rob Litton, Alexandria, La., $3,500; 2. Kevin Sitton, Baytown, Tex., $2,000; 3. James Ward, Lettsworth, La., $1,500; 4. Howard Willis, Daytona, Tex., $1,200; 5. David Ashley Jr., Zachary, La., $1,000; 6. Lee Davis, Greenwood, La., $900; 7. Kurt Kile, Nichols, Iowa, $800; 8. Allen Tippen, Minden, La., $700; 9. Ray Moore, Haughton, La., $600; 10. Jeremy Grady, Story City, Iowa, $500; 11. Patrick Daniel, Wills Point, Tex., $500; 12. Cody Skythad, Fargo, N.D., $500; 13. Jeff Chandler, Minden, La., $500.
Heat races were good but feature finale was lacking for this sixty car field of SUPR late models.
FORT WORTH, Texas (February 28, 2008) - Rob Litton, of Alexandria, La., captured his second SUPR Late Model championship of the Texas World Dirt Track Championship on Saturday at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.
Litton, who earned his first title in 2006, earned $3,500 for the victory in the 40-lap championship. In other championships, Terry Phillips, of Springfield, Mo., earned in the Modified title in the 40-lap event while Travis Evans, of Bullard, Tex., led every lap en route to the 30-lap Limited Modified crown.
The Texas World Dirt Track Championship attracted 397 entries for the three divisions, establishing a new record for the event.

I'd like to add that William Gould in the #60,probably had one of the best drives all weekend. He finished 3rd,right on the bumpers of the first two, after coming from a B feature Friday night. And,he's from Oklahoma.

So THAT was why he made it into the feature! I was in the press box (nice and warm in there by the way) and nothing was ever mentioned.
Yes, William Gould just darn near caused an upset when he caught the two front runners. He looked really, really good.
Saturday nights modified feature proved that a driver will find a line on the racetrack if there doesn't appear to be one. The way Arpin set up using the top in turns one and two and diving down entering turn three was a thing of beauty. Heck, using lapped cars as picks is a neat thing to watch as well. Didn't know this but Phillips lost his brakes midway through the feature. That is why he kept drifting after entering the turns down low.
Lots of sport modifieds and modifieds from Oklahoma and all indications are that they will be running with NCRA this year.
Can't wait!!!!

I have watched William race around the area for a number of years now and have always been impressed with his driving. I tried to catch him while at TMS but never did.
What I did do was include a piece about him in the article I wrote about the TMS TWDTC event.
It can be found here if anyone is interested http://racefeature.com/wdtc/index.htm
David, It was a pleasure to meet you and I too was glad to be "in the booth!"
Hope to cross paths w/ you again!

David, you might know this answer.A couple years ago Gould was listed as being from broken Bow,for the last couple years he has raced out of Ft Smith.I know his wife worked at a Clinic in Ft Smith last year,I happened to meet her.Did he move to Calera or just drove for someone from there. He was shown as being from Calera.

I was just wandering if Randy Timms made the A Feature at this show...
I know he won the modified show last year but I believe the field this year was quite stronger.
I will also add, I hope he doesnt drive that southern sportmod to much more, I watched him beat and bang on so many cars, it was really a sad sight to watch. Surely he will figure out that you dont have the horses to get you out of trouble, like you do in the modifieds....

To bad this one went to Texas. Is it true only one Oklahoma man made the A?

Timms failed to make the A this year as did Troy Taylor, Jeff Taylor, Jay Noteboom, Kelly Shryock, Derek Ramirez, Paul White, Howard Willis.... the list goes on!
But that is just a testament to the level of competition that we saw!
William not only made the field, he was knocking on their doors for the lead toward the end!

This was the best field of modifieds that I have ever been able to see in person!!!!
Quite amazing and unbelievably star-studded modified drivers from everywhere...
I would hope that this tradition continues..... heck, I have seen $10,000.00 to win shows that didnt attract 1/4 of the cars and 1/16 of the drivers.
Hopefully, this show will grow each and every year. I believe if the payouts went up just a little that it would attract more modifieds than the IMCA Nationals at Boone (JMO)
I wonder, if scheduled correctly and with the same layout, if a track in OKLAHOMA could host an Oklahoma Dirt Track Championship and be this successful??????
10 and 15 dollar gate passes, 25 dollar pitpasses, free pitpasses on playday, good pay to win, excellent payback through the field. Great Advertisement.....
This seems to be a recipe for succesful shows and I have personally seen it work at several different venues.
I would hope some tracks in OKLAHOMA would take a chance and see the results come through the gate!!!!

William Gould is driving a Modified for J&J Racing out of Sapulpa. He drives for other people in other classes though. He drove a Late Model last weekend at TMS under the name Ronny Gould, not to be confused with Ronny Gould Jr. that races at Brill.

Jaydad37,
I agree that there was some amazing competition at this race. That is an unbelievable facility. But the fact of the matter is that the way it was ran left a lot to be desired.
They screwed a lot of drivers and owners with the change Saturday. The promoter said he didn't want everyone to be there until early Sunday morning trying to finish races, so they ran 8 qualifiers with 24 cars and only the top 2 would transfer to the A. That isn't what we were told before anyone went to the track. Here is a list of problems that needed to be fixed immediately.
People waited for up to 3 hrs to get pit passes. (2 or 3 people working that line.)
Registration line took forever. Just a few people working it.
They posted heat race and feature info on 11"x 8" paper in small font waist high on registration trailer. That was a joke. It looked like a farmer just busted open a sack of cubes in the middle of 200 hungry cows.
Saturday night format was a rip off.
After races were over there were 2 long lines at the registration trailer. 1 lady handing money out for mods and limited. (Same lady) One guy taking in transponders 400+ (1 guy) so much for getting us out early.
This is how I would sum it up. Facility was awesome. If it wasn't for that there wouldn't be 1/4 of the car count.
I don't think you need to worry about that many cars coming back. There were a lot of pissed people after the races sat. There was a lack of organisation like I have never seen before and it was all at the racers expense.
He should thank his stars that TMS is where he has his race. Thats what draws the cars not his performance as a promoter.
Statefair Speedway in OKC should take a close look at this as well. Although I like many of the people that work at the track, if people showed up based off how they were treated by the promoter it would be a ghost town. The facility is what draws the cars there not the way it is promoted or the track is prepared.
Lanny Edwards,
How about an answer on the mufflers before the day we come to the race track. It is obvious you don't give a crap about us drivers and owners but we like racing a State Fair Speedway in OKC. I have an even better idea. If there is something you want to change, do the testing before you change the rules. Its called common sense. Quit jacking people around based off impaired off cuff decisions. We deal with that from you weekly during the race season, and now we are dealing with it in the off season.
The sacrifices we make to race at a place we love!

I dont want to get anything started on here but would like to set the record straight for everyone who reads this....
It only took me about 15 min. to get pitpass and just about the same at registration (we took advice of website and pre-registered), as for the non qualifiers races on saturday, that is how it was listed on website. I know my driver went to pay window and had to leave to get his wallet for I.D. and still took him less than 30min.
I know that they need to be a little more prepared and Im sure you will see this race continue to grow and whomever it is that is promoting it will be better next year. I'm sure they had no idea that the turn out would be anywhere that good.
I will speak only for me here but I have waited in line much longer at my hometown track when they were putting on show. Everyone that i spoke with has said that they cant wait to get back there and race again.
I'm sure everyone has thier own way of thinking but after traveling to several shows myself, I can tell you this wasnt that bad....
Could it be better, ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! Just like everyone of the sportmods from OKLAHOMA who failed to make the A FEATURE.....
Again, Im not trying to get anyone cross threaded here, just sounds like to me, that the trip to texas was alot more smoother for some of us.
IM SURE THE PROMOTER WILL IMPROVE.... 215 MODIFIEDS, 123 SPORTMODS, AND 60 LATEMODELS HE WILL DO WHATEVER HE NEEDS TO TO KEEP THAT GOING....

I pre reg.as well. Tell that 15min story to the people that were in the line that streched 300' to 500' feet down that street Friday morning. I was there from Thursday -- Sunday and it was a pain to know what was going on.
As for doing better. He knew after thursdays practice there was going to be a huge turn out, Nothing changed. If it wasn't for the facility it wouldn't be anything near what it is. I know that the program stated that there were going to be 8 qualifers. I don't think he thought there would be 200 mods in the 8 qualifers? A good business man will adjust a program to accomidate turnout. Thats how you keep people comming back. Another thing, If you are worried about time, why wait until 7pm to start racing?
I am not attacking the promoter personaly I am just stating facts and I am sure far more share my view than yours.
