Every now and then i come across an old picture of Lloyd Ruby. Crazy how many awesome cars he drove and never seems to act as if it was a big deal at all.
Here he is in a rare Halibrand Shrike Indycar.

Trying to qualify at the '68 Hoosier Hundred. Short but valiant try.

Oh well, if you can't be a fireman, might as well try this racing thing and see where it goes.

Parnelli threw a fit trying to get this car. Tony Bettenhausen got it, died driving another during shakedown. Who do they call? 'Ole Rube of course

Hang onto your roots boys. I've done everything I can do. It's in your hands now. The good Lord willin', I'll be showing up from time to time to see how you're makin' out.

This is much more modern, but it will give you an idea of what it was like out there. Just imagine A LOT MORE MOTORCYCLES AND MEANER, TOUGHER MEN!

A few years later Lloyd tried to return the favor, but he came up short. This is from the pic earlier of him at the Hoosier 100 in '68

You ever dream of buying one of those Ford Gt-40s? Ole Rube got paid to drive and win in the real thing, and in several different cars! This video doesn't say it, but yes Ruby was on the winning team here .

So,
Hopefully now you can see that Lloyd Ruby DID win in all of the same cars the other greats won in. In many cases he taught them a thing or two, but then he learned a few things from them I'm sure.
Yes, he was The Man at the 69 500, but apparently Lady Luck(that invisible thing that makes Indy "Indy" had a thing for an Italian team that year.
This song makes me think of those days and those Men- My heroes(after my Dad and my Grandfather)
