I've been thinking this and saying this forever. This is without a doubt the way to go. IMO the huge first place purse will keep 'regular' drivers away. They know they have no shot at winning and they also know it may draw in other drivers like Kyle Larson who do have a chance at winning, therefore, limiting their chance to even qualify.
For example, imo, the Tuscarora 50 does not need to by 51, 52, 53....60 to win. It can be $40k or $50k and spread the rest out over the field. I can't think of anyone that would say "no, I'm not going because it's only 40 to win instead of 50"

The Tuscarora 50 does pay good throughout the field though. It's $2000 to start the A main and a full payout for the B main. There's even a non-qualifiers race which pays 2G to win plus a guaranteed spot in next years 50.

Good point. I do agree with that.

To me it is still too top heavy. It will be even worse this year.

Dumb question here but do you guys think the purses really affect who's going to come to what show? There's interesting thoughts on both sides but I think everyone would agree that nobody can fund a sprint car team on purse money alone. So would a guy like Lance Dewease tow from PA to CA because he would get an extra $2,000 in purse money guaranteed? I don't have the answer but I have a hard time believing an extra $2,000-$3,000 is going to make much of a difference when these guys are racing cars that cost nearly $100,000. To tow to a race 800 miles away with a hauler getting 6-8 MPG and then put everyone up in hotels for a race that you know you're probably going to run in the back, which gives you a better chance of a wreck. Does making $1,000 guaranteed vs $4,000 guaranteed make much difference when there is a chance you could have $50,000- $100,000 worth of destroyed equipment? I remember Knoxville years ago and Dobmeirer crashed on the first lap in turn one of the A-main. I said to the guy next to me "I'll bet he's pissed". He said "Fuck no, he just made $7,000 for 10 seconds of racing, he's the smartest guy out here". And I thought but didn' say "Yeah but he just destroyed a $75,000 race car." Also if it's $1,000,000 to win vs $40,000 does that affect which of the top dogs show up? $40,000 is still more than you're going to make at most races throughout the US in a year if you win.
