I agree completely with Stan. I am 39 years old and when I had a hearing a test for my job a few years ago, the audiologist told me that I have some upper range hearing loss. I have not noticed any kind of problem, but it really was a wakeup call for me, and I now wear earplugs every time I attend a race. I wish now I had not spent 30+ years attending races without hearing protection.
I don't get the argument at all that people won't attend if the cars have mufflers or that neighbors should get a big eff you about the noise. It doesn't matter how long the race track has been there. Complaining neighbors are what get racetracks all over shut down.
|
Bottom line, I don't attend races for the noise, it's all about the visual experience and the beer has a little bit to do with it as well. My friend from Sioux Falls Greg Gunderson loves Sprint Car racing and he can't hear the roar of the motors. If it's good enough for Greg without a any sound it's good enough for me! ;)

god, please! tell me the muffler rule will not be enforced during nationals weeks?, I havent looked over 2012 nationals entry rules , but, I absolutly hate the idea of the soft hush put on a the cars, afterall we put all this time effort and money into building HP, then to hush it up absolutly floors me, I happen to love open headers , Its not like the weekly routine is that impossible to anticipate, Loud thumping music by passing cars on weekdays, thats more of a inconvienance to me ? passing trains laying on the horn, thats rather agrivating but the typical citizen chooses to deal with it, besides they have too, I dont believe Knoxville is near as loud of a track with the 12ft retaining wall, It actually displaces alot of noise in my humble opinion as compaired to othe tracks I have visited over the years , again, this track produces alot of revinue, I would be surprized the locals have issues with? If the cars are too loud everyone has thier prefferance, ear plugs are always redily avalible , and make a great souvineer anyway, I say keep them uncorked ,Loud n Proud ! but thats just me..

I do not think these mufflers will make a soft hush. I have not heard one yet. They will reduce the decibls some, but you will hear the motors. I talked to mr Schoenfeld, and he said some of outlaws had them on in California. I remember about 20 years ago we had to run I think they called them turbo mufflers at Desmoines These mufflers got red hot and it sort of bothered the driver because he could hear the rear end whine and the valve train. The Knoxville mufflers will be loud enough.

the ones I have used in the past have been a glorified spark arrestor of sorts, but did quiet the motor a noticeable level, AND the exhaust temps went up, correct fueling with a open header ,did cause increased exhaust temp with the muffler as expected , however it can be helpfull (occasionally) on the cool nights with holding temp for exh valves ect, proubly not going to kill any motors and components , but, just another attraction being overanalized by some enthusiests that dont realize it maybe? afterall, what do most fans miss the most in the off season ? the smell of methanol and the noise ! , lets take away the smell too.. get my point?? 90% of core sprint fans love the noise. agreed, too much of a bad thing can be harmfull, but from a distance and not subject too for a long duration, its just music to my ears, maybe its just been a long offseason ? see ya at the tracks, ill be the one not b*#chn about the noise, again, JMO...

I agree--The scream of a high revvin V-8 and the smell of methanol is a big part of the experience. As for the sob stories of so and so losing their hearing, that's their own dang fault,if it's too loud for you ear plugs don't cost much.Don't dictate for the rest of us what you believe is good for us,our government does plenty of that already,a lot of us like the noise,I personally prefer them without mufflers.

as i live in knoxville too. i was told that the cops hate the races because it brings a bunch of drunks in and the cops dont like to deal with all the stuff. they hate having to do their job!
|
Maybe we'll get lucky and Chief Losada will get that job in Grinnell........
Local police never had an issue with the raceway prior to Losada and Sprafka (because the chiefs before them were born and raised in Knoxville).

I respect the police but what a couple of police say does not mean much. So many police or other people get cozy with thier life and do not want to get off of butt to do something extra. A saturday night at knoxville evan at national time is mild compaired to LA, Chicago, and NYC. I guess we can use same idea that police know about Knoxville before they take the job.

Knoxville's had muffler rule for YEARS even during the Nationals.
The new mufflers aren't going to quiet the cars like you think, the noise just doesn't carry as far
The cars that tested the mufflers last season weren't any quieter at the track than the cars running the old muffler.
Listen to the KNIA/KRLS conversation with John McCoy, this is something they've been working on for 5 YEARS with the World of Outlaws. The intent is to make one muffler legal across the nation, which should save ALL of the teams $$$ in the long run by not having to have different mufflers for different tracks.

Great plan. Lets hope there isn't multiple versions of this muffler already out there.

Nobody mentioned Obama, and I can hear my grandkids just fine, have driven sprints and attend more races than most, just happen to disagree with you on mufflers,I don't believe it will make a dimes worth of difference to those that complain and like I said ear plugs are cheap.

I was 4-13 yrs old sitting at Knoxville every night. I remember being 6 and passing out just after the 'modified' A main. I never had hearing protection at Knoxville and never will. My son won't get any either this year.
I just got a new part time job, tending bar, and I can still hear over the crowd, "Damn, that guy in the racing shirt has a nice ass." :) Like I am blind to see it in the mirror.

we are all sprint car fans. none of us can hear for shit.
At my last physical the doc told me I was nearly deaf in my mid level hearing range. I could only think to be pissed at the doctor for telling me that - as I never noticed up until then - but have noticed ever since lol

They ones bitchin about mufflers have evidently never heard them... They are not that much quieter.. They just seem to take the "pain" away from listening to a race.. I didn't care for them when I raced JUST because now I could hear all of that valvetrain noise, but I eventually wore them... just too late..
For all you other macho no ear plug guys (Yea, Jackhole you too!) go stand in the infield at Pevely for a sprint race with no ear protection and see if you can walk tomorrow.. I too have hearing loss from being around sprints, blown fuel motors, racing drag cars and dirtbikes over the years...
BTW, and inch of your penis does not fall off IF you wear ear protection!

never heard them? , your right, im usually up to speed with them barken away, dont make me wonder to the shop or dig through the trailer to find the exact # schonefeld muffler is required,(as of 2011) I have two sets of headers with mufflers, I had to kick out another 80-100 bucks to purchase more POS mufflers to comply with Knox rules, and now, "sounds" like again! as well , as our own local sprint track requires, Ill say this , the first chance I get, the crappy lookn muffered headers come off and my stainless Rocket pair (WITHOUT mufflers) goes on, religiously,
each individual is more or less sensitive to sound, its not because your hearing is bad that the sound doesnt bother you, pitches and frequencies effect others /ourselves differently, I love the noise, if its too dam loud, ill wear something, simple as that , now a child , with his future ahead of him, yes put some protection on, they need to learn to protect thier health too, its the parents/adults JOB to do this ,
As for WoO and Knox working for years to produce a muffler to use across the nation, what a bunch of B.S. to begin with, I dont care much for mufflers, but, to make a manditory # model and manufacture is appauling, who are these guys anyway? most of you hate Goodyears, but ,a manditory muffler maufacuter and model is ok? maybe we can all wake up tommarrow eat the same bowl of cereal ,same sandwich for lunch, and vanilla ice cream before we go to bed, 7 days a week..
Im not trying to sell your kids drugs, im not plotting a murder ,I dont hide dead pandas in my freezer, I just like loud racecars.. is that too strange ?

I have no problem with a muffler rule or a Tire rule...
The entire point of the new muffler is to make 1 muffler work at EVERY TRACK in the United States (Knoxville's mufflers were basically a pipe welded inside a bigger pipe, while other tracks has DB limits that made the Knoxville muffler useless at them and made the teams have multiple sets of headers as most weld the mufflers to them to ensure they don't get disqualified for losing a muffler). By reducing the mufflers down to 1 that you can use at every track means you don't have to have 4 or 5 sets of headers in the hauler/garage anymore.
Crap, better not tell the header companies, teams won't need as many sets of headers every year anymore......I guess that those must be super cheap though, because everyone seems to have multiple sets of them with different mufflers welded to them. Shouldn't the new muffler make it so they don't have to have so many different ones and they can spend less $$$ on multiple mufflers / multiple headers???
As far as tires go, it is what it is. Hoosier had the first contract, their tires were GREAT, but they had just as many blow-outs as the Goodyears and tracks were rubber-down almost every night. Goodyear tires are OK, still have blowouts, but the tracks don't rubber-down as often.
Doubt there's a correlation, but one thing is for sure. Goodyear is building what the sanctioning bodies/tracks want to make good racing / Hoosier was making tires the drivers wanted because they hooked up better but the racing sucked. (As evidenced by 360 racing compared to 410 racing the last 2 years).
When Hoosier dominated the market, the 360's put on better RACING on the same tires. All of a sudden when Goodyear took over the 410 tire market, the 410's are putting on better RACING becuase the tires won't hook up like the drivers want. Take a look at time trial times from Knoxville last year. 360's on Hoosiers were almost always within .2 seconds of the 410's on Goodyears (some nights the 360's timed BETTER than the 410's).
May be time to mix the 360's and the 410's together and just call them SPRINT CARS again...

THE $80 T0 $100 DOLLARS YOU SPENT ON MUFFLERS IS LESS THAN HALF AS MUCH AS YOU SPEND ON A TIRE. wHAT ARE TIRES NOW, ABOUT $230 WITH TAX? THE MUFFLERS SEEM TO LAST FOREVER. WE JUST KEEP CUTTING THEM OF OF HEADERS AND REWELD THEM ON A NEW SET. THINGS MIGHT GET WORSE, MAYBE OBAMA MIGHT BE REALECTED.
