Can anyone recommend a headset for my teenage son so he can listen to the speedway chatter? We go to central PA tracks but I'm clueless on what to get. Brands/models would be appreciated and locations to buy it.

Of course you will need a scanner as well where you can program UHF and VHF channels.

This headset uses the 1/8th inch audio connection.

So...I have a 100 channel programmable Racing Electronics scanner that I used for the NASCAR races that I no longer use if you would be interested in that. I have a leather case, charger, headset, and short antenna. All conveniently located in central PA.

Get a decent set of headphones for this and it should be all you need.  Most of the tracks I am aware of use the default channels to talk to the drivers.  Once you locate the track officials channel you can lock that in also.

A raceceiver will provide what you are looking for at each track and earbuds will provide superior comfort to any entry level headsets (Sony makes a pretty good $15 earbud for this purpose).  If you happen to know what raceiver channel is being used each race event, the least expensive option is the Baofeng UV-82 radio for around $35.  We use these for some of our crew members and guests.  The extra setup and programming would definitely get old and make the raceiver the best option in your case i believe.
