Kaley Gharst – Gearing up for Speedweeks!

(Bill W) July 14, 2015 – Kaley Gharst and the Sandvig #7 team have a busy fortnight planned.  This week, JSTS Speedweek gets underway Wednesday night at the Sioux Speedway in Sioux Center, Iowa.  Thursday, the series moves on to Jackson, Minnesota, before heading to Fairmont, Minnesota Friday and back to Jackson on Saturday.  Next week, FVP National Sprint League “Fair Speedweek” begins Tuesday, July 21 in Britt, Iowa.  Last Saturday night, the Decatur, Illinois driver had another podium run at Jackson.

Things started well for Kaley in the heat at Jackson on Saturday.  “We drew well and started on the outside of the front row of the heat,” he says.  “We ran second and we were able to make the redraw.”

He would draw a three, putting him inside row two for the main event.  “We were up to second there for a while,” says Kaley.  “We got into traffic and got to moving around in some lapped cars. (Skylar) Prochaska got underneath us.  We were able to get him back a lap later.”

Kaley continued his battle with Prochaska, but settled for third at the checkers.  “He was able to get back by us,” he says.  “We had a yellow, and I tried something on the restart and couldn’t quite make it stick.  We settled for third.  We pretty much finished where we started all night.”

Kaley has noticed an improvement in track conditions at Jackson lately.  “They’re getting a little more water on it,” he says.  “Hopefully, that continues this week and we can get two good grooves going.”

The defending JSTS champion was also its Speedweek champ three years ago, and hopes to continue that this week.  “We were able to win it in 2012,” says Kaley.  “We were able to win two of those races, and ran second in the other two.”

The team is also hoping to have their 410 ready for next week.  “It’s going to be hitting the dyno here,” says Kaley.  “If everything goes well, we should be ready to race with the NSL at Britt.”
