Kaley Gharst – Knocking Off the Rust!

(Bill W) April 16, 2015 – Kaley Gharst and Mike Sandvig’s #7 team raced in their first event of the season last Saturday night at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.  Though they would have liked to have had a better showing than their 19th place finish, it was no small task with 40 good cars in the pit area at the inaugural event for the FVP National Sprint League.  The series next event will be on Friday, May 8 at the Eagle Raceway near Eagle, Nebraska.

Coming out 23rd in the order for time trials, the defending JSTS champion qualified 22nd quick. “We struggled a bit in qualifying there,” he says.  “I felt like I left a little bit on the table out there. We could have used more points to start the night with, that’s for sure.”

The Decatur, Illinois driver started up front in his heat and came home second to lock himself into the main event.  “We let Terry (McCarl) by us there and ran second,” says Kaley.  “Obviously, it wasn’t too bad, but we’d have liked to have qualified a little better and start a little deeper in the heat race.  With the point system, that’s what you need to make the top eight.”

He would start outside of row ten in the feature.  “I think the car was really good,” says Kaley.  “It was just the driver that was rusty.  I passed several cars there, but I would make a mistake and let them back by.”

Kaley would checker 19th.  “It was just a lot of back and forth, and in the end, we didn’t make up a whole lot of ground,” he says.  “We ended up moving up one spot.  We’re looking for a little better results, and we’re hoping to find them before we go to Eagle.”
