"After seeing the Outlaws race in person, I began to follow their exploits around the country. This was pre-internet and pre-cable. None of the networks covered any dirt-track racing at all. I would read Open Wheel magazine from cover to cover as soon as I got it in the mail. Without fail, when the Outlaws were coming to a track near you, you didn’t miss it. We drove for hours and sometimes slept in our cars. Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell were like jousting knights locked in an epic battle. They didn’t like each other. Kinser was the bull, Swindell was the technician. If they couldn’t win the race, they at least wanted to beat each other. But they won races. They won a lot of them. "

Be a bit easier to read without the checkered flag background. If you keep choose to keep it, please make it much more subtle.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I'm better at turning wrenches than computer keyboards and I appreciate the input. I'll work on it.

I went with a "boring but easier to read" background for now. Still learning this stuff as I go along. Thanks guys.

After reading the article on Sammy in the new Speed Sport today it doesn't sound to me like he wants to jump back into a sprint car anytime soon as has been recently rumoured, but we'll see.

Very nice piece. Guys like Steve and Sammy will never be replaced. Others will come along and forge their own legacy for sure but it will never be the same. Its the end of an era. Just like in central Pa in the last 5 years or so we have seen several of the guys who owned the 90's and 2000's such as Fast Freddie, Todd Shaffer, Cris Eash and others move on and Kreitz, Dewease and Hodnett will be retiring sooner rather than later. Thankfully there's a ton of young talent who is more than capable of carrying the torch and it will be exciting to watch but like I said, you can't replace what the previous generation brought to the table. That's why we should all appreciate what we have while it's here because nothing goes on forever.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I'm still trying to figure this one out. Hopefully I'll be pushin' the cushion on this gig soon!

I just have one question, with extensive respect to Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell { two of the greatest human beings to ever grace motorsports}. I have just one question....When will this Cry me a river Fest end? Really folks? There are soo many great spint car racers from around the country I couldn't even name them all if i wanted too. C Bell, Abreu, Clauson, Keading brothers, Madsen brothers, Brian Brown, B Sweet, Dewease, Hodnett, all of the PA POSSE just to name a few. All were gonna do though is sit here a cry a river because two guys retired. This sounds like somthing Nelligan would do, find the negative in everything. Kevin and Kraig are still out there competing in the footsteps of their fathers. Jesus Christ people, dry your eyes and move on. Beleive it or not, sprint car racing will still exist without Steve Kinser. Take it easy.

My point was less "Oh no! Swindell and Kinser are gone!" and more of "What's the WoO going to do to stay healthy moving forward?"
WoO had some cache when Kinser and Swindell were in their glory days. The WoO sanctioning body has morphed into something radically different than they were in 1978. They have a need for change, and I don't think they have the desire to change. They think they don't need to.
I interviewed a promising young up-and-coming talent (who will remain nameless, but he's in the list of names you mentioned) at the Turkey Night Grand Prix and asked him if he was working on a full-time WoO ride and he answered me frankly. "No, I'm not interested in Outlaws, I want the freedom to race when and where I want."
You are right, there is some fantastic talent in sprint cars right now. I look forward to what these guys bring for the future.

+1 gone but not forgotten
The internet is nice but I'd gladly trade it for the paper - and the Editor's Notebook - even if I had to wait until Wednesday...or Thursday....or Friday...Saturday.
Asked a mailman many years ago if he subscribed to NSSN. His reply - 'nope, I read yours" :)
