Brian Brown – Second at I-80!

(Bill W) October 14, 2014 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team find themselves with a week off in anticipation of next week’s Short Track Nationals at the I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas.  Last weekend, the Grain Valley, Missouri drover checkered second in the Bobby Parker Memorial at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska.

I know you like competing at I-80 Speedway.

It was great to go to the Bobby Parker Memorial.  It’s a great paying race to finish off the year for I-80 Speedway as part of the Cornhusker Classic.  It was a whale of an event.

You were able to win your heat after drawing a starting spot in the second row.

We got a good start and we were able to get to the lead.  It was the best I’ve felt getting around I-80 in a while.  We haven’t been at our best there lately.

You were starting fourth in the feature.  What was the team thinking heading in?

We knew it would probably going to lay rubber in the feature.  We thought it would be sooner in three and four than one and two.  We were able to get to third pretty quickly.

You were able to get to second behind Don Droud Jr.

I think we found the rubber a little bit before (second place) Billy Alley in three and four.  We were able to sneak by him with a good run, and then the yellow came out.  Droud’s guy told him where the rubber was in three and four and he moved down.

You reeled in the leader at that point.

I found some rubber on the exit of turn two.  As a driver you’re thinking it’s a matter of time before the track lays rubber (down low).  As you’re catching him, you don’t want to do something stupid though, and there’s no rubber down there, and you get beat that way.

As it turns out, someone behind you found the preferred line before you did.

I think (Danny Lasoski) saw Billy down low in one and two and found some rubber.  He found it before us and got by Droud and me at the same time.  I was able to get by Droud in the next corner and that was all she wrote.

It’s tough to get beat that way.

Sometimes, it’s better to be second or third.  I ran the leader down, and thought I had a shot at him, so I didn’t want to go searching around.  As it played out, Danny got us.

What’s the team up to this week?

We’re getting things prepared for the Short Track Nationals next week.  That’s a big event for us, and we’re going to try to be prepared the best we can for that and the World Finals at Charlotte in November to finish up the year.
