Carson McCarl – Good Run Close to Home!

(Bill W) July 10, 2014 – Carson McCarl raced close to home last Thursday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines.  It was a solid night that saw him bring the Mastell Brothers Racing #27 home in sixth place.  This Friday, he’ll venture north to the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin to run the “Open Wheel Nationals” with the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series.

Thursday’s race on the ½-mile at the state fairgrounds saw Carson run second in his heat after starting third. “We were pretty good in the heat,” he says.  “It was a tricky track all night.  It was really heavy and rough.  I don’t mind rough race tracks at all, but when you’re going 120 down those long straightaways, it gets a little sketchy.  (Jon) Agan got away from us, but it helped us.  It showed me where I needed to be running.”

The second place run locked him into the Dash, where he started in row three.  “We were o.k. in the Dash,” says Carson.  “We were able to get up to fourth, which was good, because the draw put us on the outside of row one for the feature.  That was good, because I wouldn’t want to be mid-pack for that one.  A lot of guys had trouble back there and got upside down.”

Carson stayed in the top three for a while.  “We were good the whole feature,” he says of the car.  “We were running third for a while.  We had a restart, and I went up top and tried to make something happen.  I hooked a rut, about dumped it and somehow saved it.  I came back down into sixth and that was where we finished.”

Overall, it gave Carson some momentum heading into Friday.  “It was a pretty good weekend,” he says.  “I was glad to keep it on all fours and load it back into the trailer.  A lot of guys didn’t.”

The last time Carson ventured to St. Croix Falls, he registered a podium finish.  “We’ll be going up to St. Croix on Friday for the ‘Open Wheel Nationals’,” he says.  “My owners (Mastell Brothers) are putting that on.  We don’t have our own truck and trailer, so it looks like we’ll have to come back to Iowa on Saturday.”

Carson would like to thank Mastell Brothers Trailer Service, Inc., Deanfield Farms (Gary and Sally Dean), Berryhill Racing, Vortex, Rossie Feed & Grain, Hoosier, DeBerg Concrete, HRP, Engler Machine, Phil and Vivian, Rider Racing Engines, Justice Brothers-Gillund Enterprises, Country Builders Construction, CM Rock, Bayaire Industries, Hinchman Racewear, Schoenfeld Headers, BMRS, Crow Safety, Butlerbuilt, KSE, Aurora Rod Ends, Chris Spaulding – Attorney at Law, Bell and Jocko's for all their help!
