LONG POND, Pa. - Kyle Larson has a new ride but it’s not by choice.
After missing shifts in his racecar during recent tests at Pocono and Road Atlanta, Larson’s team had him get a street car with a stick shift to keep practicing.
“It seems like I’m probably the worst shifter of all time in a stock car,’’ Larson said after qualifying on the pole for Saturday’s ARCA race at Pocono. “It’s kind of embarrassing missing a lot of shifts.
“That’s my biggest worry going into this weekend, making sure I don’t miss any shifts. My timing is just off. I think I try to rush things too quick, and I start missing shifts.’’
Larson’s penalty is to drive a black Camaro SS when he’s home. This isn’t the first time he’s driven a street car with a stick shift - which he admits is “why it is more embarrassing.’’
He says the Camaro such a powerful car and he’s driving it on neighborhood streets that it makes him feel self-conscious.
“I feel like one of those 16-year-old kids who just got their license, revving it up and listening to the engine pop,’’ Larson said.
“I can’t wait to get through all the tracks that we have to shift at a lot and get back into an automatic.’’
Larson also will work on his shifting on the track. He’s scheduled to attend a Bondurant driving school Tuesday and Wednesday

Well, he finished a very respectable 5th today and his teammate (McMurray) was 10th!
The NASCAR choice for ROY came home 17th.

Never been a Napcar fan, short attention span, I guess, but Larson has piqued my interest this year. Can anyone tell me why in many of the races this year Kyle has finished well ahead of Dillon, yet Dillon earned more for the race than Kyle?

Larson has always had this problem in the NASCAR cars and trucks. It makes him very poor at restarts unfortunately, but he usually gains back his positions lost in the next 20 or so laps it seems. Hope he can improve. I didn't watch the race at Pocono, but it seems he managed that track quite well with his 5th place.

NASCAR's purse payout is complicated. Part of the payout is based on where the team finished in points the previous season. Austin took over Harvick's team which finished in the top 12 last year (3rd) so Austin gets the extra $ for that bonus. (Winner's circle) Kyle took over Montoya and, well, he finished outside the top 20.

I believe contigency sponsorships also add to the purse payouts. ? Am i correct in this? Some cars get extra for where they finish based on the small little stickers on their cars. I know this was true in the past--dont know if it still holds true today or not. ?

Has nascar commitments that week, Taladega. Chili Bowl might be the next time we see him in a dirt car.

Some of the extra money may also come from being the defending Nationwide Series Champion and that bonus money.

Yea that makes a lot of sense! You receive money for races that you've already won and have been paid for and you keep getting paid in respect to where you finished the previous year in the points!!! Excuse me but that is Jacked Up!!! Part of why I don't watch NASCAR is it's more about Fame, Stature & Money that racing.
