Wednesdays with Wayne – Losing the Gamble! (Bill W) April 9, 2014 – Sometimes you win the gamble, sometimes you lose. The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team had an eye on the weather at Attica Raceway Park in Ohio all week and it didn’t look good for the All Star event there. Not wanting to risk the eleven-hour tow from Knoxville, Iowa headquarters only to get rained out, the team stayed closer to home and raced in Nebraska. A clogged up fuel system ended the weekend early for Wayne at I-80 Speedway in Nebraska. This week, the team is looking at a pair of 410 MOWA events in Illinois and Iowa. Wayne talked about the decision not to tow to Attica, which got one of its two nights of racing in. “We were waiting on the weather,” he says. “It didn’t look good, and they weren’t going to make a decision until Saturday morning. That was way too late to leave for us, and I didn’t want to drive eleven hours to rain out. We took our chances with the weather, and it definitely bit us with the All Star deal.” He will still see plenty of racing in the Ohio area. “We’re still going to run a lot of races over that way,” says Wayne. “We’re still planning on running a lot of those shows like Ohio Speedweek and more in that area…it just eliminates us from the point deal.” Better weather dawned in Nebraska on Saturday and Wayne ran second in his heat race at the ASCS-Midwest show at I-80 Speedway. “We were pretty decent in the heat,” he says. “We were a little free. I started outside, and the bottom was the place to be. Terry (McCarl) was able to get by us and we finished second, but Terry was really good there that night.” The feature saw Wayne start inside row five on the high-banked 4/10-mile oval. Some bad fuel ended things early, resulting in a DNF. “We were running about ninth or so, and the motor started laying down,” he says. “I couldn’t figure out why. We got to investigating, and we ran the heat on the fuel we brought with us. The fuel we bought at the track that we used in the feature ending up clogging the fuel filter and the nozzles up. It almost burned the motor up. Dennis Parks built us a good 360 engine. We’re fortunate we didn’t hurt it.” Wayne plans to run with the Midwest Open Wheel Association this weekend. The series’ opener will beFriday night at the Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois. They will move on to the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa on Saturday. “We’ve always enjoyed going to Burlington,” says Wayne. “We’ve had some success there. We ran second last year with MOWA at Jacksonville too. Hopefully, we can get a win or two with the 410 to get us going.” Follow Updates on Facebook!
