It's the end of an era with The Kings retirement. Maybe something new can come out of it and start a new tradition. The Champion should carry the Number 1, just like F1, like it is in Australia and New Zealand with their Sprintcar Champions. I'm not sure of its The Knoxville Nationals Champ, The WOO Champ or maybe a points Champ on the Big 4 races.. Nationals/National Open/Eldora/Gold Cup.. But I'm tired of people carrying #1 when clearly they aren't.. This could be done for 360 and 305.. A nationally recognised #1 in all classes.. What do you think ?

You are about the only guy I know that loves to be called names. As for as the #1 plate for the champ it`s ok for motorcycles (flat track, supercross) but not for me. Fill in the blank...he`s the biggest (Sammy) out there. He tried to go with just Sam a few years ago and it just didn`t work. Slammin Sam see that just doesn`t work.

I don't think the #1 plate is that big an issue with sprints, midgest or even Napcar. Drivers just don't care.

Steve will always be 11, Sammy #1, Jeff Gordon #24, AJ #14. Do you think Schatz is going to change from #15?

I do not see the point of this at all.  drivers have thier favorite numbers and fans associate car number with the driver.  If car number is what driver or owners want why should a fan care?  Just another thing for a few people to loose sleep about.

If you have to have a #1 on your car to tell fans your the champ, then there's a problem.

sprint cars aren't F1 and i hope to hell it stays as far away from it as possible.

nascar is screwing itself by trying to induce things that are not natural to it, like the contrived playoff system.

let F1 do what it wants.

to indy and beyond!!

Steve and 11, yes.  Sammy and 1, yes. Jeff Gordon #24...I don't think so.  When I think Jeff Gordon, I think of #6, #16, #4, #1, it wasn't until he landed in Moneyville that he ran the #24.

do it in the dirt

It would pretty much be impossible to bring in a #1 rule for the current champion of a series. Both Indycar and F1 have the rule where the previous champion gets the chance to drive a car with the #1 (which is a tradition that I enjoy honestly), but sprint cars are too disorganized for that. Between WoO, All Stars, ASCS, USAC, WSS, 410's, 360's, 305's, wings, non-wings, local tracks, New Zealand, Australia, pavement, dirt, etc. there is no way to establish one champion that would get #1 on their car for the year. Now one sanctioning body such as the WoO or ASCS could implement that kind of rule for their series and their series only, but then you'd have to deal with outside drivers coming in and having to change their number if they use the #1 elsewhere.

It just wouldn't work for sprint cars.

Sure it could work on a series level. If you run a series or track and your not the defending champ, you don't run the #1. You run as 1x or 1a or whatever. It goes by whoever is sactioning the race. It already happens. If Holbrook/ Call 83 runs with the Outlaws they're going to run as 83x, because TK is 83. I bet if TK ran a All-Star event and the Holbrook/ Call 83 was running, TK would run as 83x. To say someone is the national #1 would be tough. I remember my uncle won a track championship, the next year he kept his normal number, but ran the #1 on the inside of the left wing panel.

I get it maybe it's not for everyone.

I did some checking in Australia where they have it. It's one race every year in a different state. It's a coverted award and the drivers chase the Championship #1 and they get to carry it for the year until the next year it's run. Here's some names that us Americans are familiar with that have won it .. James McFadden, Max Dumesny, Gary Brazier (6times), Gary Rush (10times), Most recently David Murcott, Kerry Madsen, Skip Jackson and Brooke Tatnell (4times) I found pictures of all of them with the 1 on their car

In fact all the classes in Australia make it a big deal, from 360's to Micros and Mini Sprints to IMCA

I think the best way for 410 here is to do it over the big 4 races where all the top level guys run those races

PS .. I knew a Sammy fan would be the first to say something and I'll be honest, he's not #1 in my eyes and the Stats back that up, why then should he have the privilage of having it on his car.

And you know what I might be wrong but I think Schatz would run it if he earned it. It's good for fans and sponsors.

Schatz isn't 15th in my eyes and the stats back that up,  so why is he # 15 ?

Maybe they don't swap numbers around so us idiot sprint car fans don't get all confused when we're trying to decide which t-shirt to wear!

I'll bet my balls if the Posse won it the first time. It would build momentum after that. I'd love to see Hodnett or even The Low Rider win it,  Shit would get fun then
