Wednesdays with Wayne – Bad Luck in Vegas! (Bill W) March 12, 2014 – The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team did not have “Lady Luck” on their side with the World of Outlaws in Las Vegas last week. A broken motor in the Dash on Wednesday night definitely put a damper on things, but the team is back in their Iowa headquarters preparing for the All Stars season opener in a few weeks. Meanwhile, Wayne will be competing March 21 and 22 in Ray Williams’ car with the ASCS National series at Devil's Bowl Speedway. Things couldn’t have begun much better for Wayne in Vegas. He qualified 16th quick on Wednesday, putting him on the pole of his heat. “Things started out really well,” he says. “We qualified right where we needed to be to get ourselves in the Dash. We were really good in the heat and won that pretty easily.” Starting tenth in a Dash that would determine the first five rows of the main event, Wayne had the motor let go. “It’s just (bad) luck!” he says. “We broke a motor there, and had to change it for the feature.” Starting tenth, Wayne was running thirteenth in the feature when he decided to call it a night. “I screwed up really,” he says of pulling in. “I thought I was further back than I was. I’m not one of those guys to ride around the back. We’re not running for points with the Outlaws, and there are a lot of spots back there that pay the same. We were up further than I thought, so it was my mistake to pull off. On the other hand, the car didn’t feel good and we weren’t gaining on anyone. There’s no sense risking tearing something up or breaking another motor.” With the backup motor in on Thursday night, qualifying did not go as well (27th quick). Playing catchup all night resulted in a DNF in the B. “The motor ran a lot different and that changed my feel for the car,” says Wayne. “It handled a lot different. The racetrack was a lot heavier than it was on Wednesday. You had to pass early or you were done and behind the eight-ball.” Wayne will return to a familiar venue in Mesquite, Texas where he has had plenty of success. “We’re planning on driving Ray Williams City Vending car with the ASCS at the Devil’s Bowl coming up in two weeks,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to that. That’s one of our favorite places to run.” As for the west coast trip that resulted in a pair of broken motors, you have to keep going according to Wayne. “What do you do?” he says. “It’s part of it. We haven’t lost a motor in a good while. I guess it was our turn.” The All Star Circuit of Champions season will get back underway in Ohio on April 4 and 5 at Attica Raceway Park. From there, the team will return to the Devil’s Bowl when the World of Outlaws make their first appearance at the half-mile in several years on April 18 and 19. Follow Updates on Facebook!
