Wednesdays with Wayne – In Vegas with the Outlaws Tonight!

(Bill W) March 5, 2014 – The trip across the country from Tampa, Florida to Yuma, Arizona goes a lot quicker coming off of a win, and that’s exactly how the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team rode in last week.  Coming off the big wins at the Ronald Laney Memorial “King of the 360’s”, the team headed to the Cocopah Speedway for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series opener in Arizona. Unfortunately, the week ended with a broken motor, but the Knoxville, Iowa driver is ready to face the World of Outlaws at the Dirt Track in Las Vegas for a two-night event starting tonight.

Things started well with Friday’s prelim in Yuma.  Wayne won from the pole in his heat race.  “We drew really well,” he says.  “‘Slippy’ (Conner Nelson) got us a good number.  The car was o.k.  We got through there and into the redraw.”

The draw saw him start seventh in the preliminary main event.  He struggled a bit to finish tenth. “We just missed it with the car a little bit,” says Wayne.  “We tried a few little things…just tried to get better, when we needed to back up and do what we’d been doing.  We’re learning at this point and trying to get better.  We just made a mistake.”

Saturday afternoon was spent making changes for Saturday’s finale.  “We made all the changes we wanted to make the car better,” says Wayne.  “We built a new wing to try.  That made the car way too tight in the heat.”

Wayne would start where he finished in the heat…fourth.  “We had a rain delay, which made the track good for a while,” he says.  “Eventually, it blew off and it was dry-slick like the tracks usually are down here.”

Starting fourth in the B, Wayne quickly surged to the front.  “We made some changes to free the car up, and we were really, really good,” he says.  “It was probably the best car we’ve had all year.”

With the white flag in sight, disaster struck.  “The motor broke with two laps to go, and that was that,” says Wayne.  “It was too bad.  We were able to drive around the outside of the guys in front of us on the start.  The car was really, really good.”

A city like Las Vegas can’t keep a guy like Wayne down.  “I’m refreshed,” he says.  “I spent yesterday just doing nothing…which is tough to do here in Vegas!  We’re ready for tonight.  I’m excited to get back out there.  Originally, we hadn’t planned to go to Tucson (Saturday), but if everything is working good after Vegas, we might as well before we head home.”
