Wednesdays with Wayne – Finding Speed! (Bill W) February 19, 2014 – It was obvious that qualifying was an issue for Wayne Johnson and the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team last week at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida. Once the racing started, however, the Knoxville, Iowa driver was moving forward in arguably the toughest field of sprinters you’ll see anywhere. In Sunday’s finale with the World of Outlaws, he found himself moving up five spots in the feature. This weekend, the team switches to 360 racing in the “Sunshine State” and the Ronald Laney Memorial “King of the 360’s” at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa. The team spent their four nights of racing last week at Volusia trying to dig themselves out of qualifying holes. “We were working hard, messing around with different stuff,” says Wayne. “We finally found a balance in the car. We were just trying to get things in order, and the World of Outlaws shows on a fast track like Volusia…with the kind of competition that’s there…that’s the best training ground. It’s the ‘world’s fastest track’. Everything else should feel slow from here on out!” One time trials were over, the team did well on the track. In B and A mains alone, they moved up a total of nineteen spots during the week. “We definitely got better as the week went on,” says Wayne. “It was nothing spectacular, but definitely better. Once we got racing, the car was really good, but the qualifying…we’re still trying to figure it out.” “The Ohio Traveler” Rick Ferkel, who sold his own racing operation, lent a helping hand to Wayne at Volusia. “Rick helped us quite a bit, and it looks like he may help us when he can, in Ohio, especially,” says Wayne. “It will be good to have someone with the experience he has help us on some of the tracks we’ll be on this year.” This weekend, the focus turns to East Bay Raceway Park and the Ronald Laney Memorial “King of the 360’s”. Wayne won the $14,500 to win event in 2010. “We’ll be putting Miles’s (Hill) motor in,” he says. “I think we’ll be really good there. East Bay has been really good to us in the past, and this race honors one of my good friends, Ronald Laney. We’d be honored to win it again for him.” Follow Updates on Facebook!
